Toronto FC overturns CF Montréal with two stoppage-time goals at BMO Field

Toronto FC looked headed for a narrow home defeat until stoppage time rewrote the night. Lewis Morgan equalized in the 93rd minute and Djordje Mihailovic struck two minutes later to seal a 2-1 win over CF Montréal on Saturday at BMO Field.

A match that flipped in added time

For 90 minutes, Montréal had the only breakthrough. Daniel Ríos opened the scoring in the 51st minute with a left-footed finish from the centre of the box, putting the visitors in front after a scoreless first half and giving Toronto a late deficit to solve.

That answer arrived deep into added time. In the 93rd minute, Niklas Dorsch delivered the cross and Lewis Morgan met it from the left side of the six-yard box, steering a left-footed finish into the bottom-right corner for 1-1. Toronto had spent most of the night chasing a single moment; Morgan supplied it off the bench.

The level score lasted only two minutes. Theo Corbeanu then provided the decisive pass, and Mihailovic finished from very close range in the 95th minute, his left-footed shot tucked into the bottom-left corner after a fast break. What had been Montréal's road win became Toronto's late escape.

Close numbers, ruthless timing

The broader numbers explain why this never looked like a one-sided result. Toronto held 52.2 per cent of the ball to Montréal's 47.8, earned eight corners to six and produced 14 shots. Montréal actually finished with the higher shot count, 16-14, and put seven efforts on target compared with Toronto's five. Toronto were also credited with six saves, while Montréal goalkeeper Sébastian Breza made three.

What Toronto found at the end was finishing from the right players at the right moment. Morgan scored with his only shot on target, and Mihailovic turned one of his three attempts into the winner. Corbeanu added an assist and three shots of his own, while Dorsch's delivery created the equalizer. Josh Sargent led Toronto with three shots, two of them on target, but the late scorers were the ones who changed the table of numbers into three points.

Montréal had enough involvement in the match to feel the loss. Ríos converted one of his two attempts for the opening goal, and Brayan Vera and Alexis Sánchez each put two shots on target. The visitors also matched Toronto closely in chance creation, finishing with 11 shot assists to the home side's 12. Discipline, though, tilted more heavily their way for the wrong reasons: Montréal committed 17 fouls and took three yellow cards, while Toronto committed nine fouls and received one caution.

Our take: Toronto rescued the margins

This was not a case of Toronto overwhelming Montréal from start to finish. The possession split was narrow, the shot totals were close and Montréal forced more saves. The difference was the final sequence, where Toronto turned a slim platform into a dramatic result. When matches live on small margins for that long, two clean attacking actions in stoppage time can outweigh almost everything that came before.

For Toronto, the encouraging part is obvious: the bench altered the game. Morgan and Mihailovic both arrived as substitutes and both scored, which gave the comeback extra weight beyond the clock. The area for improvement is just as clear. Toronto won eight corners and recorded 12 shot assists but still produced only five shots on target, so there is room to turn a fair amount of attacking setup into cleaner finishing earlier in matches.

For Montréal, the frustration is harder to ignore because the statistical base was good enough to support a result. Sixteen shots, seven on target and the lead after 51 minutes usually put a road side in a strong position. What the visitors lacked was either a second goal or a cleaner close to the match once they were ahead. A one-goal cushion survived until the 93rd minute; after that, it disappeared almost instantly.
