Suárez strikes early, Messi finishes late as Inter Miami blanks D.C. United 4-0

Inter Miami CF settled this one quickly and never let it drift. Luis Suárez scored in the third and 39th minutes, Lionel Messi added goals in the 47th and 60th, and Miami beat D.C. United 4-0 at Nu Stadium on Saturday.

A two-goal cushion before halftime changed the night

The defining stretch came at the beginning and end of the first half. Suárez opened the scoring in the third minute with a left-footed finish from the centre of the box into the top-left corner, with Germán Berterame supplying the assist. That immediate breakthrough gave Miami the lead and, just as importantly, freed its two headline forwards to spend the rest of the evening attacking from in front rather than chasing the game.

D.C. United stayed within reach until the 39th minute, when the same combination struck again. Berterame provided a headed pass and Suárez converted from very close range to the bottom-left corner for 2-0. It was a sharp summary of Suárez’s night: four shots, all four on target, two goals and an assist. Miami did not need volume from him. It needed precision, and it got it twice before the interval.

Messi made sure there was no second-half suspense

Any thought of a response disappeared almost immediately after halftime. Messi scored in the 47th minute, taking a pass from Suárez and finishing left-footed from the centre of the box into the bottom-right corner. The match had shifted from competitive to commanding: Miami’s two scorers from the first half simply reversed roles, and the lead grew to three before D.C. could reset.

The fourth arrived in the 60th minute and completed the marquee pairing’s work. Rodrigo De Paul supplied the assist, Messi struck again from the centre of the box, and the finish again found the bottom-right corner. Messi ended with eight shots, four on target and two goals. Between them, Messi and Suárez produced all four goals, with Berterame’s two assists making him a central figure in the buildup.

There was a pleasing completeness to Miami’s scoring line. All four goals were assisted, and three different players created them. That matters because this was not a one-touch cameo from a single star. It was a coordinated attacking performance in which the finishing received the headlines, but the supplying work did real damage as well.

The numbers behind Miami’s control

Miami’s statistical edge matched the scoreline. It held 61.7 per cent possession, completed 568 of 622 passes and put nine of 17 shots on target. D.C. United had enough of the ball to register 15 shots of its own, but only two tested Dayne St. Clair. When one side hits the target nine times and the other only twice, the difference on the scoreboard rarely feels accidental.

Sean Johnson’s five saves prevented the margin from growing even larger, while St. Clair was required to make two stops to preserve the clean sheet. Miami also finished with more corners, 4-2, and its passing volume was far higher than D.C.’s 319 completed passes. Those figures do not explain every passage of play, but they do frame the night clearly: Miami spent more time constructing attacks, and it was much more efficient once those moves reached the box.

Our take: a polished attacking night, and a clear warning for D.C.

Our take: Miami’s strongest quality here was not merely that it scored four times. It was that the game’s best attacking players were also its most accurate ones. Suárez put every one of his four shots on target. Messi put four of eight on frame and scored twice. Berterame added two assists despite recording only one shot on target himself. That is the kind of distribution an opponent struggles to survive, because danger does not come from one route alone.

If there was a detail for Miami to tidy up, it was discipline in the challenge count. The home side committed 17 fouls, compared with six by D.C. United. That did not cost it on this occasion, but in a tighter match that volume can hand away territory and rhythm. The clean sheet and the attacking finish were excellent; the foul total was the one number that looked rougher than the rest of the performance.

For D.C. United, the immediate problem was accuracy. Fifteen shots should create a better path back into a game than this, yet only two were on target. The crossing numbers tell a similar story: 17 attempts, four accurate. There was enough activity to suggest the visitors were not passive, but not enough precision to trouble a side that had already built a lead. Against a finishing team as clinical as Miami was on Saturday, that margin for error disappears very quickly.
