Denkey's brace and late Cincinnati burst spoil Almirón equalizer in Atlanta

FC Cincinnati turned a level match into a 3-1 road win Saturday night, with Kévin Denkey scoring twice and Tom Barlow helping shape all three away goals after Atlanta United had drawn even through Miguel Almirón.

Denkey breaks the deadlock after halftime

The breakthrough did not arrive until the 52nd minute, when Cincinnati found the cleaner finish in a game that had stayed goalless through the first half. Tom Barlow supplied the opening touch with a headed pass, and Denkey finished with his left foot from the centre of the box to put the visitors ahead 1-0.

That goal immediately gave shape to the night. Atlanta would finish with more possession, more passes and more total shots, but Cincinnati had the first decisive moment. In a match where margins were going to matter, Denkey's opener forced Atlanta to chase from behind.

Almirón answers, but Cincinnati lands the final blows

Atlanta did respond. In the 69th minute, Miguel Almirón brought the home side level with a right-footed finish from the centre of the box after Breel Embolo provided the assist. It was Atlanta's only goal of the night, and for a brief stretch it looked as though the momentum had shifted.

The level score lasted 15 minutes. Cincinnati reclaimed the lead in the 84th when Kyle Smith set up Barlow, who struck right-footed from the centre of the box into the top-left corner for a 2-1 advantage.

Any remaining Atlanta push was ended deep into stoppage time. In the 97th minute, Ender Echenique sent Denkey through for his second goal, another finish from the centre of the box, this one driven to the bottom-left corner. That sequence gave Cincinnati all three goals from central scoring positions and put the result beyond doubt.

Our take: Cincinnati made the cleaner moments count

This was not a night when the raw totals told the full story in Atlanta's favour. The home side held 55.7 per cent of possession, completed 428 passes, earned five corners and produced 16 shots, six of them on target. Cincinnati had 44.3 per cent of the ball and 13 shots, with four on target. Yet the visitors turned three of those four on-target efforts into goals, while goalkeeper Evan Louro was credited with five saves to protect the lead when Atlanta did test him.

Cincinnati's most important attacking names were clear. Denkey finished with two goals from six shots and three efforts on target. Barlow added a goal and an assist, meaning the pair combined directly on the opener and then shared responsibility for two of the three scoring contributions overall. Smith and Echenique each added late assists, giving Cincinnati a spread of service even though the finishing burden fell mainly on Denkey.

For Atlanta, the frustration is easy to identify without overstating it. There was enough volume to stay in the match: Almirón scored, Giuliano Galoppo put two shots on target, Tristan Muyumba added two more, and Atlanta forced Louro into repeated work. But seven offsides and just one goal from 16 attempts point to a night when possession and territory did not become enough clean end product. For Cincinnati, the result is strong, though 14 fouls and three yellow cards suggest there is room to make that kind of road win a little less ragged next time. On this night, however, the finishing edge was the difference.
