McGuire’s 90+2 header rescues Houston in 2-2 draw with Minnesota United

Minnesota United twice climbed into control Saturday night at Allianz Field, only for Houston Dynamo FC to answer at the last moment. Duncan McGuire’s header in the second minute of stoppage time wiped out a late lead and secured a 2-2 MLS draw after Kelvin Yeboah and Marcus Caldeira had turned around Lyle Foster’s first-half opener.

Foster set the first mark, Yeboah erased it early

Houston struck first in the 18th minute when Lyle Foster finished with his right foot from the centre of the box, driving the ball into the bottom-left corner for a 1-0 lead. It was the only confirmed breakthrough of the first half, but the broader match numbers hinted that neither side was going away. Houston finished with a slight edge in possession at 54.1 per cent, while Minnesota still built a nearly even shot count in a game that would stay open deep into stoppage time.

Minnesota’s response arrived immediately after the restart. In the 48th minute, Morris Duggan supplied Kelvin Yeboah, who scored with a right-footed finish from the right side of the six-yard box into the top-left corner. That goal reset the night and also underlined Yeboah’s involvement. He led Minnesota with four shots, put two on target and converted the chance that pulled the home side level before Houston could settle into its halftime advantage.

Caldeira looked to have won it until Houston’s last corner

The second-half turnaround was complete in the 78th minute. Marcus Caldeira, on as a substitute, met Cherrion Valerius’ cross and finished from the right side of the six-yard box into the bottom-right corner for a 2-1 Minnesota lead. It was a sharp contribution from the bench: Caldeira scored on one of his two shots, and both of those efforts were on target. For Minnesota, it looked like the sort of late intervention that decides a match.

Instead, Houston found one more answer. In the second minute of stoppage time, McGuire headed home from very close range to the top-right corner after a headed pass from Markanich following a corner. The equalizer punished Minnesota at the one moment when game management mattered most and rewarded Houston for staying within touching distance. Houston earned five corners on the night to Minnesota’s two, and the last of them changed the result.

The defensive numbers help explain why the match never tilted fully to one side. Minnesota goalkeeper Drake Callender made four saves, while Houston as a team was credited with four saves and 28 clearances. Minnesota created 15 shots and six on target, but Houston kept enough danger away from goal to remain alive for that final set piece. At the other end, Houston’s six shots on target ensured Callender had work to do throughout.

Small margins told the bigger story

The draw also sat on a contrast in discipline and ball use. Minnesota committed 16 fouls and picked up two yellow cards, while Houston committed only five fouls and avoided a booking. Houston completed 446 passes to Minnesota’s 373, yet Minnesota still produced 14 shot assists to Houston’s nine. That combination made the game feel unsettled rather than one-sided: Houston moved the ball more, but Minnesota still generated enough service and enough attempts to think three points were there for the taking.

Set pieces and timing, though, often outweigh tidy totals. Minnesota had already done the hard part by overturning a deficit through Yeboah and Caldeira. What it did not do was close the final sequence on the corner that led to McGuire’s header. Houston, meanwhile, will take encouragement from the simplest fact available: after trailing in the 78th minute, it still found the decisive delivery and finish before the final whistle.

Our take

Minnesota will feel this as two points dropped because the lead survived until 90+2. That reaction is understandable. But the match statistics do not support any claim that Houston stole something it had not earned. The teams were nearly level in shots, 15-14 for Minnesota, and exactly level in shots on target at six apiece. Houston also had the edge in possession and corners. A draw was painful for the home side because of when the equalizer arrived, not because it was out of character with the rest of the match.

If Minnesota looks for one immediate area to clean up, the late concession from a corner and the 16 fouls stand out. If Houston looks for one step forward, it may be finding that final touch earlier after producing 14 shots and six on target before McGuire finally delivered the second goal in stoppage time. In the end, this was a match of answers: Foster opened it, Yeboah and Caldeira flipped it, and McGuire made sure it closed level.
