Jamal Thiaré’s stoppage-time winner lifts Columbus Crew past Inter Miami 2-1

The breakthrough arrived after a long deadlock

For most of the night, this match looked as though it would be remembered for two familiar finishers and one missed opportunity to pull away. Columbus went in front in the 28th minute when Josef Martínez converted a penalty with a right-footed shot to the bottom-left corner. Five minutes later, Inter Miami had its answer through Lionel Messi, who drove a left-footed free kick into the top-left corner to level the score at 1-1.

That equalizer held for more than an hour. Then, in the eighth minute of second-half stoppage time, Columbus found the final touch it had been chasing. Thiaré, on as a substitute, scored with a right-footed finish from the centre of the box to the high centre of the goal, giving the Crew the winning margin at 90+8.

The scoring sequence tells a clean story: Columbus earned the first clear reward, Miami answered quickly through its biggest individual moment, and the deciding goal came only after the match had stretched deep into added time. In a game with plenty of interruptions and discipline issues, that late finish gave the result its shape.

Columbus created more of the night’s volume

The final score was narrow, but the broader numbers lean toward Columbus. The Crew finished with 14 shots to Miami’s five, put six efforts on target to Miami’s three, and won nine corners compared with just one for the visitors. Inter Miami had more of the ball at 56.2 per cent possession, yet Columbus generated the larger share of attempts and the heavier set-piece count.

That difference mattered because Columbus kept multiple shooters involved even before Thiaré settled it. Brais Méndez led the Crew with four shots on target from four attempts, while Anass Zaroury also got four shots away. Josef Martínez added two shots and turned his lone effort on target into the opening goal. Miami goalkeeper Rocco Ríos Novo finished with four saves, a sign that Columbus kept asking for another breakthrough long after the first-half exchange.

Miami’s attack was far more concentrated. Messi accounted for three of the club’s five shots and two of its three efforts on target, including the equalizer from the free kick. Rodrigo De Paul supplied the other shot on target. Patrick Schulte made two saves for Columbus, and the home side did not need much more from its goalkeeper because Miami produced relatively few chances by comparison.

Our take: the Crew found the extra play that the numbers hinted at

The safest reading of this match is not that Columbus dominated every phase, but that it assembled more repeat opportunities and eventually turned one of them into the winner. The possession split favoured Miami, yet the Crew’s edge in shots, shots on target and corners suggests the home side did more with the moments it created. When a team reaches 14 shots and nine corners, a single-goal total rarely feels fully secure; Columbus kept the game alive long enough to change that.

There is still a reasonable critique for the winner. Columbus needed a penalty and a stoppage-time strike to cash in on that volume, so the finishing was hardly ruthless for most of the evening. If there is an area to sharpen, it is turning sustained attacking pressure into a second goal earlier, especially on a night when Méndez and Zaroury were involved often but could not add a finish of their own.

For Miami, the concern is that control of the ball did not become enough threat in front of goal. Five total shots and one corner are thin returns for a side that had 56.2 per cent possession, and the discipline line adds another warning sign: 17 fouls, five yellow cards and a red card. The visitors still had Messi’s set-piece quality to keep them level, but Columbus kept producing a little more, and Thiaré’s 98th-minute finish was the decisive proof.
