From track meet to turning point
The first half had the feel of a team trying to sprint clear and another refusing to let it happen. Los Angeles grabbed an early edge when Erica Wheeler hit a three at 6:45 of the first quarter and Rae Burrell followed with a three-point play at 5:28 for a 16-13 lead. Dallas answered without panic. Aziaha James scored on a step-back jumper at 41.4 seconds and then buried a 26-foot three at 22.5 to pull the Wings even at 25-25 after one quarter.
That tone carried into the second. Dallas nudged ahead 35-32 on James’ 27-foot three at 8:03, but the Sparks kept finding answers through Dearica Hamby and Nneka Ogwumike. The Wings led 44-42 after Maddy Siegrist’s layup with 29.4 seconds left in the half, and Cameron Brink tied it with 13.8 seconds remaining. A 44-44 halftime score was a fair reading of a game that had already seen 12 lead changes and very little separation.
The break changed the game because Dallas finally produced the first sustained run. Ogwumike opened the third quarter with a jumper at 9:49 for a 46-44 Sparks lead, and the teams traded baskets until the score reached 58-58 with 1:50 left in the period. Then came the sequence that decided it: Awak Kuier made two free throws at 1:31, hit a step-back three from 22 feet at 32.0 seconds, and Odyssey Sims finished the quarter with a layup at 4.1 seconds. In a span of less than two minutes, Dallas turned level terms into a 69-58 advantage. Jessica Shepard kept pressing in the fourth, scoring at 9:47, 9:28 and 8:57 as the lead stretched to 76-60 and the night tilted for good.
Shepard’s fingerprints were everywhere
The numbers say Shepard finished with 13 points, 11 rebounds and 12 assists, and those numbers still undersell how central she was to Dallas’ rhythm. She set up Paige Bueckers early, found Siegrist and Kitija Laksa on the perimeter, and kept feeding the game where it was easiest. When a team records 31 assists on 38 made field goals, somebody is shaping the flow; in this one, Shepard was doing it from everywhere.
Bueckers supplied the clean scoring line Dallas needed, finishing with 19 points on 8-of-13 shooting while adding six rebounds and three assists. She scored the game’s first basket, steadied the second quarter with a pull-up and a late three, and remained efficient when the Sparks were still within reach. Ogunbowale never had a huge scoring night by her standards, but her third-quarter burst mattered: a three at 8:14, a layup at 6:04 and a step-back jumper at 5:36 helped keep Dallas in front until the bigger run arrived.
What made the Wings hard to live with was the spread of the damage. James had 10 points and changed the end of the first quarter. Laksa added 10, Alysha Clark scored nine on 3-for-3 shooting, and Kuier paired seven points with six blocks. Put that alongside the team edges — 46 rebounds to 27, 11 blocks to six, 46 points in the paint and 50.7 percent shooting — and the result starts to look less like a hot stretch and more like a full-game profile. Even with 20 turnovers, Dallas had too many productive possessions elsewhere.
Our take: a real Dallas step, and obvious work for LA
For Dallas, the warning label is easy to spot even in a 20-point win. The Wings turned the ball over 20 times, and Los Angeles turned those mistakes into 22 points. On a night when Dallas shot better, rebounded better and passed better, that sloppiness did not cost them. It is still the one area that kept the game more competitive than the rest of the stat sheet suggests. If there is a next layer for this offense, it is not more shot-making; it is fewer empty possessions.
For the Sparks, there was enough from the top of the scoring to stay interested for a long time. Ogwumike had 18 points on 8-of-12 shooting, Hamby scored 14, and Burrell added 12. Los Angeles also came up with 13 steals, which is not the mark of a team that disappeared. But the problems were heavier than those positives: 37.2 percent shooting, 12-of-19 at the line, only 27 rebounds, and too many Dallas finishes around the basket or off the next pass. When the Wings post 46 paint points and 31 assists, the place to begin is clear enough — end more possessions on the glass and make the opponent work harder for its cleanest looks.
The result feels earned rather than accidental. A 44-44 halftime tie gave both teams a chance to write the ending, and Dallas wrote the stronger one by getting sharper where the game could actually be pushed: on the boards, in the paint and in the shared possession. The Sparks had the activity to make this messy. The Wings had the better answers once the game asked for structure.
