Baker-Whiting opened it, and Nashville kept coming

The breakthrough arrived in the 30th minute and it came from a set piece. Reed Baker-Whiting finished from very close range after a Nashville corner, giving the visitors the lead after a first half in which they would go on to earn six corners to Austin’s four.

That opener mattered because Nashville kept generating volume after it. Elias Saad doubled the lead in the 67th minute with a right-footed finish from very close range into the bottom-left corner, a second goal built on close-range pressure rather than a speculative strike from distance.

The broader numbers fit that pattern. Nashville finished with 24 shots and 11 on target, compared with 11 shots and five on target for Austin, while also holding 57.9 per cent of possession. Brad Stuver still produced seven saves for Austin, a total that shows how much work Nashville forced at the home end even before the match broke open late.

Vázquez gave Austin a lifeline, but it did not last

Austin did find a route back into the game in the 76th minute. Brandon Vázquez met a cross from Facundo Torres and hit a right-footed finish from the centre of the box into the bottom-right corner, cutting Nashville’s advantage to 2-1 and giving the home side a genuine opening with time left.

That goal was the clearest reward for Austin’s most active attacking outlet. Vázquez finished with five shots and three on target, both team highs, and his goal briefly shifted the tone after Nashville had spent much of the night ahead on the shot count. Facundo Torres, credited with the assist, provided one of Austin’s few decisive final balls.

The comeback window shut quickly. Shak Mohammed restored Nashville’s two-goal cushion in the 88th minute with a right-footed shot from the left side of the box into the bottom-right corner, assisted by Hany Mukhtar. Then, in stoppage time, Mukhtar added the fourth from the centre of the box after a headed pass from Mohammed, with the goal confirmed following a VAR review.

Our take: Nashville’s edge was real, and the late finish turned it into a statement

The late goals gave the scoreline its heft, but they did not flatter Nashville. A team that produces 24 shots, puts 11 on target and forces seven saves has usually done more than enough to deserve control of the result. Possession on its own can be misleading, yet Nashville paired its 57.9 per cent share of the ball with a clear advantage in attempts and shots on target, which is the stronger indicator here.

Austin’s problem was not the absence of a response; it was how short the response lasted. Vázquez pulled the match back to 2-1 in the 76th minute, but Austin could not extend that pressure into an equalizer before Mohammed struck in the 88th. When a rally lasts only 12 minutes before the margin is restored, the comeback goal becomes a warning sign for the opponent rather than a turning point for the side that scored it.

There were still useful pieces for Austin to build on. Vázquez was involved often, Torres created the goal with a cross, and Brian Schwake had to make four saves at the other end to keep Austin from adding more. But 11 total shots and five on target left Austin needing sharp finishing on a night when Nashville created chances more steadily and from more sources.

For Nashville, the most encouraging detail may have been the spread of the production. Baker-Whiting opened the scoring, Saad added the second, substitute Mohammed delivered a goal and an assist, and Mukhtar finished with a goal, an assist, five shots and four on target. That kind of shared attacking return is difficult to defend over 90 minutes, and Austin never fully solved it once the first goal arrived.
