San Diego had the ball; Philadelphia had the answers
San Diego FC finished with 58.5 per cent possession and won 11 corners, but neither advantage produced a goal. The home side took 10 shots and put five on target. Andre Blake made five saves to keep Philadelphia’s clean sheet intact, giving the Union a decisive contribution to match their work at the other end.
Philadelphia paired their lower possession share with considerably more shooting: 21 attempts to San Diego’s 10. Four different scoring events came from Union players, with an own goal completing the five-goal total. The distinction matters when reading the shot figures: the own goal was not another Philadelphia shot on target. What mattered most was the Union’s ability to build on the opener and keep extending the lead.
Sullivan’s double puts Philadelphia in command
The first goal arrived five minutes into first-half stoppage time. Cavan Sullivan finished from the centre of the box after a fast break, with Indiana Vassilev supplying the assist. Its timing left San Diego facing a deficit at the interval. Philadelphia had a lead to build on, and Sullivan would be the player to extend it.
Sullivan then doubled the lead in the 61st minute with a left-footed finish from a difficult angle on the left to the centre of the goal, again set up by Vassilev. Those two attacks were different in detail but similar in effect: Philadelphia did not need a long spell of pressure to produce a goal, only the right moment and a clean final touch.
Breaks, blocks and the own goal that widened the gap
Bruno Damiani made it 3-0 in the 67th minute, driving a right-footed shot from the centre of the box to the bottom left corner after another fast break, this time assisted by Frankie Westfield. At that point, San Diego were chasing a game that had already slipped from measured to difficult, and the body of work in front of goal never caught up.
The margin became more severe in the 87th minute when Aníbal Godoy turned the ball into his own net for Philadelphia's fourth, and Malik Jakupovic added the fifth in stoppage time from very close range. Those late events did not change the outcome so much as underline it. Philadelphia were already on top of the scoreline; the final two goals simply made the scale of the night impossible to soften.
Our take: the numbers point to different problems
For San Diego, our biggest concern is the return on their attacking delivery. Only two of 24 crosses were recorded as accurate, and 11 corners brought no goal. More selective delivery, and finding an alternative when the crossing route is not working, would be a sensible place to start the review. The two goals conceded on fast breaks also make the protection behind attacks worth examining. Possession is useful only if a team can turn it into chances without becoming vulnerable when it loses the ball.
Philadelphia, for their part, deserve credit for being direct and exact when the game opened up. They produced three assists, two of them from Vassilev, and two of their goals arrived on fast breaks. Still, the caution in the performance is obvious: a side sitting on 41.5 per cent possession and relying on 31 clearances and 19 interceptions can survive a night like this, but that balance can look different against a team that finishes a few of its own chances.
