Farrington at 45, Valiente at 87: FC Dallas punish Portland’s waste in 2-1 MLS win

The game tilted on the efficient moments

Portland handled more of the match by the raw totals. The Timbers had 60.7 percent possession, completed 482 of 563 passes and outshot Dallas 18-9. But the numbers that matter most were the finishing ones, and Dallas won those. They put five shots on target to Portland’s four, got three saves from Daniel when they needed them, and survived long enough behind 26 clearances, 13 effective tackles and seven interceptions to let the match turn on a few decisive actions instead of long stretches of control.

The first of those actions arrived at 45 minutes and gave Dallas the kind of lead that changes the emotional math of a game. Logan Farrington scored with a right-footed shot from a difficult angle on the right, sending it to the centre of the goal after Shaq Moore supplied the assist. It was not the product of volume from Dallas. It was the product of making one moment count, and that theme carried through the night. Farrington finished with two shots, one on target and one goal, which is the sort of compact line that fit Dallas as a whole.

Portland’s problem was not access to the ball. It was what the ball became once the Timbers got near goal. They produced 15 shot assists, won five corners and delivered 17 crosses, seven of them accurate. Cole Bassett took four shots. Antony took four. Kristoffer Velde had three. Ariel Lassiter had three. Yet only Lassiter found the net. Eighteen shots with four on target is enough activity to keep a defense busy, but not enough precision to control the score.

One more opening, one more finish

That halftime lead left the match balanced on a single goal for most of the evening, and Portland’s possession kept the pressure alive. Dallas did not need many attacking sequences to change that. At 87 minutes, Joaquín Valiente made it 2-0 with a left-footed shot from the centre of the box into the bottom-left corner, with Petar Musa providing the assist. If Farrington’s goal came from a difficult angle, Valiente’s came from a more central scoring position, and together they showed two different ways Dallas found finishing clarity.

Musa’s contribution deserves its own line because it captured the economy of Dallas’ attack. He did not score, but he recorded the assist on the second goal and put both of his shots on target. Moore assisted the first. Farrington finished his chance. Valiente finished his. Dallas had only five shot assists as a team, a third of Portland’s total, but their key attacking players extracted real value from them. That is the difference between a match with less possession and a match with less threat; Dallas were the former, not the latter.

Our take: this was a sharp lesson in the difference between command of the ball and command of the result. Portland passed cleanly, at 90 percent completion, and still forced only three saves from Daniel despite taking 18 shots. Dallas, meanwhile, placed five of nine efforts on target and turned two of them into goals. That does not mean Dallas owned every phase; Portland clearly carried more of the game’s territory and circulation. It means Dallas were better when the play reached the one part of the field that decides MLS matches most quickly.

A late reply, and clear homework

Lassiter’s goal at 90'+3' kept the finish honest, even if it came too late to change the outcome. Gage Guerra set him up, and Lassiter finished with a left-footed shot from the centre of the box into the bottom-left corner. It was Portland’s most accurate individual attacking line of the night: three shots, three on target, one goal. That detail matters, because it showed the Timbers did eventually find the sort of direct end product their possession had been missing.

For Dallas, the area to monitor is the amount of defending required to protect a lead. This win came with only 39.3 percent possession, 288 accurate passes and 26 clearances, along with 13 fouls committed. That can work, as it did here, but it also leaves little room for a quiet ending once a late goal arrives. Keeping the ball longer or cutting down some of the service Portland sent in from wide areas might make future leads feel less fragile. For Portland, the fix points the other way. The Timbers do not need more of the ball after posting 60.7 percent possession and 563 passes; they need more from it after turning 18 shots into just four on target and one goal, with three offsides ending other moves early.

The result feels fair in one important way and cautionary in another. Fair, because Dallas took their best openings and defended with enough resolve to make those finishes stand up. Cautionary, because both clubs leave with a clear tension in the numbers. Dallas proved efficiency can beat control. Portland proved control means little without sharper finishing. On this night at Toyota Stadium, that was the whole story.
