André Luiz’s late double lifts Sporting Kansas City back into 3-3 draw with Portland

A first half that changed in stoppage time

Portland struck first in the 10th minute, when David da Costa finished from the centre of the box into the bottom-left corner after Ariel Lassiter supplied the assist. That early goal set the tone for a night in which Sporting Kansas City spent long stretches chasing the scoreline but never quite letting it get away.

The most dramatic turn of the match came deep in first-half stoppage time. Vincent Janssen doubled Portland’s lead from the penalty spot at 45+4, driving his finish high down the middle. Sporting answered before the break, though, and the reply mattered. André Luiz scored at 45+7 from the centre of the box following a set-piece situation, cutting the deficit to 2-1 and changing the feel of the evening before halftime arrived.

From 3-1 down to level in two minutes

Portland appeared to have restored firm control in the 64th minute. Jimer Fory sent in the cross, Ariel Lassiter met it from the centre of the box and finished into the bottom-right corner for a 3-1 lead. After climbing back once, Sporting suddenly needed another recovery.

This time the response was even quicker. Justin Reynolds pulled one back in the 70th minute, finishing left-footed from the centre of the box into the top-left corner after Taylor Calheira’s assist. The level score followed only two minutes later. Seymour Reid set up André Luiz on a fast break in the 72nd, and the Sporting attacker drove another left-footed finish into the bottom-left corner for 3-3.

That eight-minute stretch, from Lassiter’s goal in the 64th to André Luiz’s equalizer in the 72nd, became the match in miniature: Portland found the breakthrough, and Sporting answered with urgency. No side managed a fourth goal after that sequence, leaving the comeback complete but unfinished.

The players who kept the scoreboard moving

André Luiz was the obvious difference-maker for Sporting. He scored twice, put three efforts on target and accounted for five shots overall, giving the home side a finisher who repeatedly kept the result alive. Reynolds added the goal that reopened the contest at 3-2, while Calheira and Reid each supplied an assist in the final rally.

Sporting’s wider numbers show why the draw stayed within reach. The official team totals credited Kansas City with more corners, 6-1, and more shot attempts than Portland. Those are not automatic signs of control, but they do show a side that kept creating enough volume to mount another push after falling behind twice.

Portland still had plenty to like going forward. Lassiter produced a goal and an assist, Da Costa opened the scoring, Janssen converted from the spot, and Fory added the cross for the Timbers’ third. Portland also held a slight edge in possession and completed more passes, enough on most nights to support an away result. On this one, the problem was not whether the Timbers could score. It was whether they could make the lead stand up.

Our take

For Sporting Kansas City, this was a draw with genuine recovery value. Falling behind in the 10th minute, then again by two goals in first-half stoppage time, could have buried the match. Instead, the home side answered at 45+7, then answered again at 70 and 72. That sequence says something useful about Sporting’s attacking persistence. It also says something less flattering about the amount of repair work the side created for itself.

For Portland, the frustration is easier to isolate because the goals were there. Three times the Timbers moved in front: 1-0, 2-0 and 3-1. Three times Sporting stayed close enough to answer. The replies at 45+7, 70 and 72 are the detail that lingers. Portland’s possession edge and efficient finishing gave the visitors a platform, but the scoring timeline shows a team that could not turn strong moments into a settled result.

A 3-3 draw can sometimes read like chaos. This one read more like missed closure on one side and stubborn rescue on the other. Sporting left with proof it could claw back a game that was slipping away. Portland left with the harder review, because scoring three away from home usually ought to be enough.
