Iloski’s VAR-awarded clincher carries Philadelphia past Real Salt Lake after late scare

Philadelphia Union built a two-goal lead and then had to withstand a stoppage-time jolt Saturday, beating Real Salt Lake 2-1 at Subaru Park behind goals from Bruno Damiani and Milan Iloski.

Damiani supplies the first break

For much of the night, the numbers suggested a close match. Philadelphia finished with a modest edge in possession at 52.3 per cent, outshot Salt Lake 14-11 and put five attempts on target to Salt Lake’s four. The difference, at least until the closing minutes, was that the Union found the cleaner finish first and protected it long enough to shape the evening.

That opener arrived in the 31st minute. Damiani took Frankie Westfield’s assist and struck a right-footed shot from the centre of the box into the bottom-right corner, turning a relatively even first half into a lead Philadelphia could manage on its own terms. Damiani’s stat line underscored his involvement: five shots, two on target and the game’s first goal.

Westfield’s contribution mattered beyond the assist. He put one of his two shots on target and was one of several Union players who added a bit of attacking volume around Damiani. Philadelphia did not overwhelm Salt Lake, but it did build more often toward the penalty area, reflected in 13 shot assists to Salt Lake’s nine and a narrow advantage in corners, 4-3.

Iloski’s finish gave Philadelphia just enough room

The match stayed at 1-0 deep into the second half, which left every missed chance feeling important. Philadelphia finally created a cushion in the 81st minute when Milan Iloski finished from very close range into the top-left corner off a Cavan Sullivan assist. The goal stood only after a VAR review, and that confirmation turned out to be the pivotal administrative detail of the night as much as the pivotal footballing moment.

Iloski’s strike changed the arithmetic, but not the tension. Real Salt Lake pulled one back in the sixth minute of stoppage time when Saba Lobjanidze scored with a right-footed finish from the centre of the box after Luc de Fougerolles set him up following a corner. Instead of a routine close, Philadelphia spent the final moments protecting a one-goal margin.

That late goal sharpened the way the match will be remembered. Andre Blake finished with three saves for Philadelphia, while Rafael made three for Salt Lake, and neither goalkeeper was buried under a barrage. The Union simply converted two of their five shots on target, while Salt Lake managed one goal from four on target. In a game without a wide statistical gap, that efficiency was enough.

Our take: productive attackers, untidy control

Philadelphia will like the spread of contributions. Damiani scored, Iloski scored, Westfield assisted and Cavan Sullivan assisted, which is a healthy sign for an attack that did not rely on a single passage or a single creator. The Union also got a shot on target from both Westfield and Sullivan, adding support around the two scorers rather than asking one player to carry the entire finishing burden.

The caution for Philadelphia sits in the disciplinary column. The Union committed 21 fouls and collected four yellow cards, compared with 13 fouls and two yellows for Salt Lake. When a team has done the difficult part by extending a 1-0 lead to 2-0 in the 81st minute, that kind of untidiness can reopen a match unnecessarily. Salt Lake’s stoppage-time goal did not erase the result, but it did expose how little comfort a two-goal lead can provide when the closing stages become ragged.

Salt Lake, meanwhile, can point to the fact that this was not a one-sided loss. The visitors were close in possession, close in shots and still alive after Lobjanidze’s late finish. The clearest area for improvement is in turning territory into cleaner delivery and earlier danger: Salt Lake completed only one of 13 crosses, and its breakthrough did not come until 90+6. Philadelphia earned the result by making more of its best moments, but the narrow margins also showed why this never felt fully settled.
