Paul Arriola sets the table twice as Sounders beat Real Salt Lake 2-0 at Lumen Field

A close game until Seattle made the difference count

This was not a match decided by overwhelming control. Seattle finished with 52.8 percent of the ball to Real Salt Lake’s 47.2, and the shot totals were just as narrow: 11 for the Sounders, 12 for RSL. Even the set-piece count stayed tight, with Seattle winning seven corners and Salt Lake six. The separation came from execution, not from a lopsided stat line.

The clearest dividing line was accuracy. Seattle put four of its 11 shots on target and scored twice. Real Salt Lake managed only two on-target efforts from 12 attempts and left with nothing. That left both goalkeepers with modest evenings on paper, Andy Thomas making two saves for Seattle and Rafael making two for RSL, but the sharper finishing belonged entirely to the home side.

The breakthrough arrived almost immediately after halftime. In the 48th minute, Danny Musovski struck a right-footed shot from outside the box into the bottom-right corner, with Arriola providing the assist. In a game that had been numerically even in so many categories, that goal changed the terms. Rusnák’s efficiency stood out. He scored on his only shot on target, just as Musovski did. Seattle did not need a barrage; it needed clean finishes from the players who got the looks. Our take: this was a mature Seattle win because it resisted the temptation to be judged by raw totals alone. The Sounders were only slightly ahead in possession, were outshot by one, and did not monopolize the attacking numbers. What they did do was turn two of their four shots on target into goals, protect the clean sheet, and avoid giving Salt Lake any finishing rhythm. Seattle also helped itself defensively with 12 interceptions, 22 clearances and three blocked shots, a useful reminder that game management is often quieter than dominance.

There is still room for Seattle to tidy the rough edges. The Sounders committed 10 fouls and drew four yellow cards, a higher discipline cost than Salt Lake’s two cautions. In a match they otherwise controlled well, that is the kind of detail worth trimming. Still, the broader verdict is favorable: Arriola gave them invention, Musovski and Rusnák supplied conviction, and the team’s accuracy settled a contest that stayed statistically close for most of the night.

Our take on Real Salt Lake is less harsh than the scoreline might invite, but the problem is plain. RSL were present in the match almost everywhere except the decisive spaces. They completed 408 passes, created eight shot assists, won six corners and actually produced more total shots than Seattle. Yet only two of those attempts were on target. When a team also lands just three of 18 crosses, the likely improvement is not some sweeping redesign; it is better end-product from the same volume. Against a Seattle side that needed only a couple of clean openings, that missing precision was the whole story.
