Austin FC erases three-goal deficit as Christian Ramírez leads 3-3 comeback against San Diego FC

San Diego turned control into a three-goal cushion

For 49 minutes, this match held its breath. The teams went to halftime scoreless, then San Diego ripped the game open with three goals in a 14-minute span that should have been enough to take all three points.

Aníbal Godoy broke the deadlock in the 50th minute with a right-footed finish from the centre of the box into the bottom-left corner. Seven minutes later, San Diego had a second when Austin defender Mikkel Desler was charged with an own goal. By the 64th minute, the visitors were cruising: Marcus Ingvartsen finished from the centre of the box, with Anders Dreyer providing the assist, and Austin suddenly faced a 3-0 deficit on its own field.

The broader numbers help explain why San Diego held that advantage for so long. The visitors finished with about 58 per cent possession and 606 accurate passes, while Austin sat closer to 42 per cent possession. San Diego did not need a flood of chances to build the lead; it used the ball, dictated long stretches of play and forced Austin to spend much of the night reacting rather than setting the terms.

Austin's service finally found its targets

What changed was not simply urgency. It was execution in the penalty area. Austin's comeback started in the 73rd minute when Brandon Vázquez headed in an Ervin Torres cross. After a night in which Austin was credited with 20 crosses but only six accurate ones, that first clean delivery into a finishing area mattered enormously.

The second goal arrived in the 82nd minute and made the game feel unstable again. Jon Bell supplied Christian Ramírez, who headed home from very close range. Austin had been trailing by three not long before that, but now San Diego was being asked to handle repeated pressure around the middle of the box, exactly where the visitors had done their own damage earlier in the half.

Ramírez completed the recovery in the 86th minute. Jon Gallagher provided the assist, and Ramírez finished with his right foot from the centre of the box into the bottom-left corner. In a matter of minutes, Austin had produced three different assists, two headed goals and one composed late finish. Ramírez ended the night with two goals from three shots, all three on target, while Vázquez added a goal of his own from three attempts.

Our take: a rescue for Austin, a warning for San Diego

From Austin's side, this draw feels far closer to a rescue than a routine point. A team that trailed 3-0 after 64 minutes had every reason to leave empty-handed, and instead found enough quality in the final stretch to rewrite the night. Still, the comeback should not hide the problem that created it. Austin spent most of the match without the ball, committed 12 fouls and did not convert its pressure into goals until the 73rd minute. If there is a lesson to carry forward, it is that the useful service arrived too late; once the deliveries became accurate, San Diego's lead started to disappear immediately.

There is also a defensive lesson for Austin that comes straight from the scoring record. San Diego's first and third goals both came from the centre of the box, and the own goal in between only deepened the damage. Falling behind is one thing; conceding three times in 14 second-half minutes is another. Austin showed character and finishing quality, but it also showed how costly central breakdowns can become.

For San Diego, the emotions point the other way. A club that held the ball for long stretches, completed more than 600 passes and led by three goals through the 64th minute will see this as a major missed opportunity. The late collapse was not abstract. Austin scored twice with headers and then found one more finish from the centre of the box. When a match turns that sharply, protecting the area in front of goal becomes the obvious place to start the post-match self-critique.

That is what makes 3-3 such a strange scoreline here. San Diego played well enough for long enough to think it had won. Austin played brilliantly enough at the end to think it had stolen something meaningful. Both ideas can be true at once, and that is why this draw will sit differently in each dressing room. Austin earned the comeback. San Diego will wonder how a game it had under control ended without a victory.
