Paul Arriola’s Late Equalizer Cancels Marco Reus Penalty in 1-1 Galaxy-Sounders Draw

The penalty set the terms, not the tone

The first goal arrived late in the first half, but the broader shape of LA Galaxy versus Seattle Sounders FC never really settled into a game one side could control. Seattle kept asking until Arriola answered

The breakthrough finally came in the 81st minute. Morris supplied the pass, and Arriola finished from very close range into the bottom left corner to make it 1-1. It was the cleanest scoring play of Seattle’s night, and it suited the way the Sounders had been living in the match: not by overwhelming LA in one category, but by repeatedly forcing another save, another clearance, another defensive action until the Galaxy’s narrow lead disappeared.

Seattle also did enough defensive work to keep the game within reach until that chance arrived. Andy Thomas made four saves, and the Sounders posted 22 clearances with five blocked shots. Those are not glamorous numbers, but they matter in a match where the opponent takes 18 shots and wins five corners. Without that resistance, Reus’s penalty could have turned into a more forgiving scoreline for LA. Instead, Seattle gave itself enough time for one accurate final touch to change the result.

Our take: 1-1 feels fair in the broadest sense, even if each team can point to a different reason it might have wanted more. LA had the higher shot total and more corners. Seattle had more possession, more passes, and more shots on target. The draw reflects that split. The Galaxy found the first goal but could not turn it into control; the Sounders created the steadier stream of direct tests but needed until the 81st minute to cash one in.

Our take: for LA Galaxy, the obvious area to study is how an 18-shot night became a one-goal night, with the only finish coming from the penalty spot. The Galaxy had no assist on their goal, put just five shots on target, and completed only six of 17 crosses. That does not mean the ideas were wrong, only that the execution in the final action was too loose to make a lead feel safe. When Reus is your only scorer in a match with that much attacking volume, the supporting threat has to become more precise.

Our take: Seattle Sounders FC can leave encouraged by the chance creation but less pleased by the messier parts around it. Eight shots on target, 390 accurate passes and a late equalizer are solid attacking foundations.
