Dotson’s VAR-confirmed opener sends Seattle Sounders FC on the way to 3-0 win at New England

Seattle Sounders FC did the cleaner work in both boxes Saturday night, turning five shots on target into three goals and leaving Gillette Stadium with a 3-0 MLS victory over the New England Revolution.

A first punch that stood up

The match’s first defining moment arrived in the 15th minute, when Hassani Dotson struck from outside the box and sent a right-footed shot into the bottom-right corner. The goal was checked and then confirmed by VAR, giving Seattle an early lead that changed the arithmetic of the night even if it did not settle the flow of play.

New England still finished with more of the ball, 56.6 per cent, and more total shots, 13 to Seattle’s nine. The Revolution also earned eight corners and completed 522 passes. Those numbers gave them enough possession to keep the game alive, but the return was thin where it mattered most. Only five of those 13 attempts were on target, and Andy Thomas stopped all five for Seattle.

The most active Revolution shooter was Peyton Miller, who produced five attempts and put four on frame. That is real involvement, and it helps explain why Thomas ended with a busy clean sheet. Still, New England’s wider delivery never became a reliable answer. The home side attempted 26 crosses and connected on only three, a mismatch that helps explain how a team with territory and set-piece volume still finished scoreless.

Joveljic and Arriola turned a live game into a clear result

For a long stretch, the scoreline stayed at 1-0 and left room for New England to believe one finish could reset the evening. Instead, Seattle found the next clean touch. In the 74th minute, Dejan Joveljic took Paul Arriola’s assist and finished with his right foot from the left side of the box into the bottom-right corner. That second goal did not just add insurance; it punished a match in which Seattle had created less overall but finished far more sharply.

Seven minutes later, Seattle removed the remaining suspense. Arriola, this time the scorer, finished a right-footed chance from the centre of the box in the 81st minute, with Jesús Ferreira credited for the assist on a move recorded as a fast break. In the space of seven minutes, the visitors turned a narrow advantage into a 3-0 road win.

The individual lines tell the same story as the scoreboard. Dotson opened the scoring. Joveljic put both of his shots on target and scored once. Arriola left with a goal and an assist, while Ferreira added the final setup off the bench. Seattle did not need a high shot count to separate itself; it needed its key attacking moments to be precise, and they were.

Our take: Seattle were ruthless, New England were left with the empty numbers

This was the kind of result that will frustrate New England because several team totals look respectable at first glance. The Revolution had the edge in possession, corners, passes and shots. They also blocked six Seattle attempts. But soccer is unforgiving when the final actions are uneven, and on this night the final actions were heavily in Seattle’s favour. Both clubs put five shots on target. Seattle scored three times; New England scored none.

Seattle’s defensive line deserves as much credit as the scorers. Thomas supplied the five saves, but the work in front of him matters too: 30 clearances, nine interceptions and 10 effective tackles. Those figures do not prove style on their own, but they do show repeated defensive interventions in a match where New England spent more time on the ball and sent in far more crosses. The Sounders also accepted some disciplinary cost, committing 15 fouls and taking two yellow cards, yet they never allowed that edge to turn into a damaging red card or a breakthrough for the home side.

If there is a practical lesson for New England, it is less about creating more and more about making better use of what was already there. Thirteen shots, eight corners and a high passing volume should usually produce more than a shutout loss, but the crossing accuracy and finishing line were not good enough. For Seattle, the room for improvement lies in reducing the foul count and perhaps building longer stretches of control with the ball. None of that will matter much in the immediate glow of this result, though. The Sounders travelled, absorbed a game in which they had less possession, and left with the only numbers that finally matter: three goals, a clean sheet and three points.
