Mukhtar turned Nashville’s pressure into a clean first-half edge

Nashville did not need a long spell of finishing luck to separate itself. It needed one sharp close-range finish and one decisive strike from distance, both supplied by Mukhtar before halftime. His opener arrived in the 16th minute, a right-footed finish from very close range into the bottom-left corner after Cristian Espinoza set him up. The second came in the 43rd, this time a right-footed shot from outside the box, again into the bottom-left corner, with Sam Surridge providing the assist.

Those two goals captured the range of Nashville’s attack. The first rewarded its ability to work into dangerous spaces around goal. The second punished Toronto from farther out and ensured the home side’s territorial edge carried real weight before the break. Mukhtar finished with two goals from five shots, while Surridge added an assist and put three of his five attempts on target.

The broader attacking numbers explain why Toronto spent so much of the night under strain. Nashville produced 20 shot assists, won nine corners and placed 11 shots on target. Even without a third goal, that is the profile of a side that kept returning to the final third and kept asking the same question of Toronto’s back line and goalkeeper.

Gavran kept the score respectable, but Toronto never found enough of the ball

If Toronto stayed within reach on the scoreboard, Gavran was the main reason. Nashville’s 11 shots on target turned into only two goals because Toronto’s goalkeeper made nine saves, a heavy workload in any road match. Toronto also logged five blocked shots, nine interceptions and 13 clearances, figures that underline how much defending was required.

The problem for Toronto was that the defensive effort rarely flipped the game in the other direction for long enough. Nashville held 61.5 per cent possession and completed 442 passes, compared with Toronto’s 228. The gap showed up in distribution too: Nashville connected on about 87 per cent of its passes and 53 of 79 long balls, while Toronto finished closer to 72 per cent passing and completed 17 of 51 long balls.

Toronto did manage 11 shots, but only three were on target, and Joe Willis stopped all three. That left Nashville’s goalkeeper with a tidy night rather than a frantic one. Toronto’s attack was present often enough to suggest some threat, but not precise enough to turn pressure into a goal or to unsettle a Nashville side that was usually dictating where the game was played.

Our take: Nashville looked authoritative; Toronto’s margins were too thin

This result felt convincing because Nashville controlled both the volume of the game and its most decisive moments. The possession advantage, the 23-11 shot edge and the 9-3 corner count all point in the same direction. When a team creates that many shooting situations and gets two different kinds of goals from its best attacker, it usually means the opponent has spent too much time reacting.

For Nashville, the only mild criticism is efficiency. Eleven shots on target and nine corners can sometimes produce a scoreline that is out of sight earlier than this one. Still, that is a small complaint beside a shutout and a first half in which Mukhtar finished the work that Nashville’s pressure created. The combination of Mukhtar’s ruthlessness, Surridge’s involvement and Espinoza’s assist gave the attack a clear spine.

Toronto’s path forward is easier to identify than to solve. The numbers suggest it needs cleaner exits and longer stretches of possession, because a team that completes only 17 long balls and spends the night at 38.5 per cent of the ball is asking its defenders and goalkeeper to survive too many repeat attacks. The shot total was not disastrous, but the lack of accuracy was. Three efforts on target from 11 attempts is not enough against a team that was already controlling the match elsewhere. On this night, Nashville’s command of the ball and Mukhtar’s finishing left Toronto chasing a game it never quite managed to reshape.
