The first cut came at 45 minutes
For much of the night, this did not read like a runaway. Toronto FC actually finished with more shots, 18 to Orlando’s 13, and stayed involved enough that the match still felt negotiable deep into it. Orlando, though, had more of the ball at 58.3 percent possession, and just before halftime that edge finally turned into the opening goal.
At 45', Zakaria Taifi supplied a cross and Antoine Griezmann finished from very close range with a left-footed shot high into the centre of the goal. It was a simple description on the scoresheet and a massive swing in the match. Toronto had done enough to keep the evening unsettled, but conceding that late in the half shifted the burden onto a side that had been generating attempts without much clean reward.
The larger numbers underline why Orlando went ahead and stayed there. Orlando put eight of 13 shots on target. Toronto managed four on target from 18 tries. That gap is the difference between a busy night and a productive one. Luka Gavran’s five saves kept Toronto from falling behind by more, while Maxime Crépeau’s four saves ensured Orlando’s first breakthrough actually mattered.
Toronto found volume; Orlando found the frame
If Toronto are searching for the frustrating truth in this one, it is probably sitting in the line beside Josh Sargent’s name: six shots, no shots on target. He was active, and Toronto as a whole were active, but activity alone did not test Orlando often enough. Markus Cimermancic, Niklas Dorsch, Derrick Etienne Jr. and Raheem Edwards each put one shot on target, yet Toronto never pieced together the finishing needed to change the game state.
There were other clues in the distribution. Toronto recorded 15 shot assists, so this was not an attack entirely starved of service, but only four of 18 crosses were accurate. That suggests a team reaching the right areas often enough, then losing sharpness on the final ball or final strike. Our take: when a side produces 18 attempts and asks the opposing goalkeeper for only four saves, the issue is not pure ambition. It is precision.
Orlando’s scorers, by contrast, were ruthless with their moments. Griezmann scored and put both of his shots on target. Iván Angulo also put both of his shots on target and scored once. Harvey Sarajian, on as a substitute, had one shot, one shot on target and one goal. Orlando did not need endless repetition; it needed clean execution, and it got it from several different players rather than leaning on a single finisher.
The late goals changed the feel of the result
What kept the match alive for so long was that the margin stayed at one goal until the 82nd minute. Toronto were still in range, even without a breakthrough, and Orlando still had to prove the first goal would be enough. Then Daryl Dike provided the assist for Harvey Sarajian, who scored with a right-footed shot from the centre of the box into the bottom left corner. At 2-0, the game finally moved from delicate to convincing.
The third goal arrived at 90'+6', and this one completed the portrait of Orlando’s evening. Justin Ellis assisted Iván Angulo, who scored with a left-footed shot from the centre of the box, the play noted as coming on a fast break. Toronto had spent the night chasing a leveler and instead got punished one more time, turning a competitive shot count into a lopsided final score.
Our take: this was the kind of 3-0 that says more about efficiency than about overwhelming territorial force. Orlando should still look at the 18 shots it conceded, the four saves Crépeau had to make, and the 13 fouls with three yellow cards; a clean sheet does not mean every defensive detail was polished. Toronto, meanwhile, has a clearer attacking correction to consider. With 18 shots, 15 shot assists and only four efforts on target, the next step is not necessarily creating more. It is making more of what is already there. On this night, Orlando City SC did exactly that, and Toronto FC never caught up.
