Washington seized it before Indiana could settle
The game announced itself almost immediately. Georgia Amoore opened the scoring with a 26-foot three at 8:52 of the first quarter, Shakira Austin followed, and Washington was off to a 5-0 start before Indiana found its footing. Even when Caitlin Clark answered with two early layups, the Mystics kept stretching the floor and the margin. Kiki Iriafen banked in a 29-footer at 7:17, Michaela Onyenwere added a three at 6:50, and Sonia Citron drilled another at 6:01 to make it 14-8. By the time Citron scored again for 22-11 and Onyenwere hit once more from deep, Washington had turned a decent opening into a commanding one. The quarter closed at 34-19 after Cotie McMahon’s late three-point play, and Indiana was already playing from a distance.
That first quarter was not a hot streak that disappeared. It was the template for the rest of the night. Washington won the second period 17-11 and took a 51-30 lead into halftime, never allowing the Fever to turn one basket into a run. Austin pushed the lead to 36-19 early in the second, Alicia Florez scored twice in the lane, and Iriafen kept cashing in from midrange and inside. Indiana got some relief from Kelsey Mitchell, including a three-point play and a deep make with six seconds left in the half, but the larger picture never changed: Washington had cleaner possessions, better finishing, and the scoreboard to match.
The paint, the pass, and a balanced box score
Washington’s numbers read like a team operating in rhythm rather than living off one scorer. The Mystics shot 37-for-65 from the field, a crisp 56.9 percent, and went 9-for-18 from three. More telling was how those points were built. They piled up 50 in the paint and assisted on 27 of their 37 field goals. Austin put up 20 points, 10 rebounds and five assists. Iriafen added 21 points and 14 rebounds. Citron finished with 16 points and nine assists, constantly showing up as the connector on the perimeter, while Amoore scored 11 and hit three triples. That is not just balance; that is lineup-wide participation in a good offensive night.
Indiana had production, but not enough efficient production. Clark scored 25 points and went a perfect 10-for-10 at the foul line, yet she needed 20 shots to get there and also had five turnovers. Mitchell scored 22, but on 8-for-20 shooting and 3-for-10 from deep. Makayla Timpson was one of the cleaner bright spots with 13 points on 4-for-4 shooting and seven rebounds. The broader issue was visible in the team totals. The Fever shot 36.6 percent overall and 6-for-28 from three, and they managed only 13 assists. That last number matters because Indiana actually did several other things well enough to stay interesting: 19-for-21 at the line, 11 offensive rebounds, 17 fast-break points, and more field-goal attempts than Washington. The problem was that the shots they did create were not converted at a comparable rate.
Indiana pushed in the third. Washington answered every time.
The Fever’s best stretch came after halftime, and for a few minutes the game hinted at a different shape. Amoore opened the third with another three for a 54-30 lead, but Indiana finally put together consecutive scoring bursts. Clark scored on a layup, Timpson finished a three-point play, Clark buried a step-back three at 7:36, and Mitchell’s layup at 7:06 brought Indiana within 59-42. Later, Clark free throws trimmed it to 62-48, the closest the Fever had been since the early second quarter. Indiana won the third 31-26, which at least gave the home side a pulse.
But every time the Fever hinted at real pressure, Washington found a stable answer. Citron hit a step-back three. Austin kept scoring at the line and in the lane. Amoore finished at the rim, Betnijah Laney-Hamilton hit a three, and Iriafen stayed productive inside. The period still ended with the Mystics up 77-61. When Aliyah Boston scored early in the fourth to make it 77-63, Washington shut the door with the game’s cleanest closing response: Amoore from three at 9:24, then Austin on back-to-back scores for an 84-63 lead by 8:01. From there, the Fever could chip away in single possessions, but they never seriously threatened the result.
Our take: this was a lesson in offensive clarity
Our take: Washington’s win was convincing because it was repeatable. The Mystics did not lean on one impossible shotmaker or one unsustainable quarter. They won with efficient shooting, interior scoring and shared creation, and those are reliable ingredients when a team posts 27 assists and 50 paint points. If there is a cautionary note inside a 16-point road win, it is small but real: 16 turnovers is more than Washington would want, and 10-for-15 at the foul line left points behind. On a less accurate night from the field, those extra empty possessions might matter more.
Our take: Indiana’s path forward from this kind of loss is not hard to spot, even if it is not easy to fix in one night. The Fever did enough secondary work to give themselves a chance at a closer game: they rebounded on the offensive glass, got to the line, protected the ball reasonably well, and won the fast-break points column 17-7. What undid them was the core math of the night. They shot 26-for-71 overall, just 6-for-28 from three, and finished with 13 assists against a Washington team that nearly doubled that total. When Clark and Mitchell combine for 47 points, Indiana should be in range more often than this. On Sunday, though, too many of those points came while trying to climb out of a hole Washington had already built with smarter, cleaner offense.
