Major League Soccer will apply a structured set of regular-season tiebreakers when clubs finish the 2026 campaign tied on points after the 34-match schedule, with the procedures taking centre stage as Decision Day begins Saturday, Nov. 7. The rules are designed to determine conference seeding for the Audi 2026 MLS Cup Playoffs and to clarify postseason qualification priorities, including hosting priority that is awarded to the best-finishing finalist in the Supporters’ Shield table.

MLS stated that if two clubs are level on points totals following the regular season, the league’s tiebreaker sequence will be used to determine the regular-season tiebreaker winner. That winner is not only relevant to overall standings positioning for the playoffs, but is also part of the framework MLS uses to manage MLS Cup hosting priority through the Supporters’ Shield, which is tied to the best-finishing finalist in that table.

The league also explained that the process does not end once the first winner is determined. If clubs remain tied after the initial portion of the first-round tiebreakers, they will advance to a second round of MLS regular-season tiebreaker procedures to determine team standings. MLS said the tiebreaker protocol continues until all required positions in the final standings have been fully resolved.

In addition to the overall ranking mechanics, MLS included disciplinary-based elements within the tiebreaker calculations. The league said that when an individual receives a second yellow card, the club will receive a maximum of seven points total. MLS added that a club can only receive a maximum of seven points for any individual incident, placing a cap on the impact a single disciplinary scenario can have on the tiebreaker math.

As Decision Day approaches, the league’s emphasis on a continuing, multi-round approach matters because MLS described a step-by-step method that persists until all tied teams are separated into final standings. That means any tie that survives early criteria can move into additional procedures, with the intent of producing a complete, definitive standings order for both the Eastern and Western Conferences as teams confirm their paths into the Audi 2026 MLS Cup Playoffs.

For teams whose playoff outcomes hinge on the margins between spots, MLS’s description of the tiebreaker framework highlights that standings positioning can be influenced not only by points earned over 34 matches, but also by how clubs are handled under the league’s later-stage tiebreaker steps. The disciplinary point caps related to second yellow cards further underline that individual incidents can be part of the separation process, even if they are capped to a fixed maximum for a given incident.

With MLS confirming that Decision Day will be guided by these procedures across both conferences, supporters and clubs will be able to follow the league’s described pathway for resolving ties as the season closes. The rules also establish that MLS Cup hosting priority is tied to performance in the Supporters’ Shield table through the best-finishing finalist, reinforcing the role of the Shield as more than a standalone regular-season accolade.
