Portland Timbers captain Diego Chara announced Monday that he will retire from professional soccer after the conclusion of the 2027 MLS Sprint Season, ending a long career closely associated with the club. The club’s captain made the decision public as the Timbers prepare for a final MLS season that stretches into the 2027 Sprint calendar.

Chara, who joined Portland as the club’s first Designated Player ahead of their inaugural 2011 MLS season, is the Timbers’ all-time leader in multiple MLS categories. The league-tracked figures cited by the club include 450 games played, 413 games started and more than 37,000 minutes in Major League Soccer play, as well as 13 goals and 38 assists across more than 500 appearances for Portland in all competitions.

In discussing his decision, Chara pointed to confidence built during the current season and support from teammates, coaching staff and the club. He said, “The performances I had during the season give me that confidence as well [as] the support of my teammates, coaching staff, by the club. That gives me the stength to continue,” and added that he is “really happy to have the opportunity to be back for next year.”

Chara also framed his retirement as a continuation of his identity with the Timbers organization. He said, “Being for this long with the team, being one of the 'original Timbers,' I think is the best way to finish this career with the Timbers.”

Over his time in Portland, the defensive midfielder helped the Timbers win major silverware and reach multiple MLS postseason finales. The announcement credits him with helping Portland lift the 2015 MLS Cup and the 2020 MLS is Back Tournament trophies, while also noting that the Timbers reached MLS Cup in 2018 and 2021 during his tenure.

Individually, Chara received league recognition during his Portland years. He was named an MLS All-Star in 2019 and earned Best XI honors in 2020, accolades cited in the announcement as part of his professional profile in MLS.

Internationally, the announcement states that Chara earned two caps for Colombia in 2010–11. His retirement plans follow a playing career that has spanned both club and national team involvement, with his late-career role rooted in Portland’s midfield and leadership group.
