Decision Day in Major League Soccer’s Eastern Conference is set to determine the remaining seeding storylines for the Audi 2026 MLS Cup Playoffs, even though all nine playoff berths in the East have already been clinched. MLS’ preview for the day frames the slate as a race to finish as high as possible—especially for the No. 2 and No. 4 seeds, the Round One positioning that follows, and the matchups that will be decided in the Wild Card round.

Nashville SC, already the Supporters’ Shield winner and the Eastern Conference’s No. 1 seed, enters Saturday’s matches with a points milestone still within reach. MLS’ Decision Day rundown says Nashville needs a win or draw at Cincinnati to break the MLS single-season points record of 74 set by Inter Miami in 2024.

Inter Miami and Lionel Messi are among the teams looking to secure the East’s No. 2 seed. According to the league’s preview, if Inter Miami defeats Charlotte FC, it will lock in second place and cannot finish lower than third. The same MLS summary notes Messi enters the final matchday with 42 total goal contributions—26 goals and 16 assists—and the final matches provide a path for him to win his second straight Golden Boot presented by Audi.

The New England Revolution are positioned one point behind Inter Miami before the same weekend’s action. MLS’ preview says New England visits Orlando City and can finish no worse than third, while still targeting second place with a win at Orlando combined with Miami dropping points versus Charlotte. That seeding scenario is part of the league’s “who will claim the No. 2 seed” emphasis heading into Decision Day.

Further down the standings, Chicago Fire FC’s focus on the No. 4 seed is presented as central to the Round One draw. MLS’ Decision Day rundown says Chicago will try to fend off Charlotte FC for the No. 4 slot, which would guarantee home-field advantage in the Round One Best-of-3 Series—scheduled to be against Charlotte. The preview adds that a Chicago victory over the Columbus Crew would secure a top-four finish for Robert Lewandowski and company, while other outcomes keep Charlotte’s door open if Charlotte can win versus Miami.

Charlotte FC has its own remaining task and a personnel-related constraint heading into Decision Day. The league’s preview states Charlotte is locked into a Round One matchup with Chicago, but notes that star winger Allan Saint-Maximin will be unavailable due to a red-card suspension.

Around the seventh-place threshold, MLS’ preview describes a contest for Round One qualification between FC Cincinnati and the Supporters’ Shield winners Nashville SC. The rundown says Cincinnati has climbed out of the Wild Card places into seventh after late-season results, and that it will need a win against Nashville to guarantee a Round One spot and potentially rise as high as sixth. Any other result, MLS notes, could allow Orlando City and Columbus to move ahead of Cincinnati into the Wild Card match.

Columbus Crew are slated to host the Wild Card match, according to MLS’ seeding scenarios, because the league says Columbus holds a one-point lead over ninth-place Orlando. The preview outlines a conditional path for Columbus to bypass the Wild Card: a win at Chicago combined with a Cincinnati loss or draw would move Columbus into seventh and straight to Round One. Conversely, if Columbus drops points and Orlando earns points, MLS says Columbus could fall to ninth and travel for the Wild Card.

Orlando’s position is framed as range-based, depending on results elsewhere. MLS says Orlando can finish anywhere from seventh to ninth, but specifies the requirements for moving to seventh and booking a Round One ticket. To do so, the preview says Orlando would need to defeat New England and also have both Columbus and Cincinnati lose. If those conditions do not all hold, MLS’ rundown projects that Orlando would play in the Wild Card match, with hosting rights potentially determined by whether Orlando secures results relative to Columbus.

MLS’ Decision Day preview also lays out the end-of-table and elimination-free context for the lower playoff line. Red Bull New York were eliminated from playoff contention one match before Decision Day, and the league says New York now hosts Atlanta United with outcomes that leave it finishing between 10th and 12th. New York City FC, also eliminated from playoff contention last weekend, is set to visit D.C. United and similarly can finish between 10th and 12th.

The preview further identifies the remaining seeding and spoiler responsibilities for Toronto FC and for several clubs finishing outside the playoff places. MLS says Toronto will try to spoil Philadelphia’s night and keep the Union from finishing sixth, with Toronto’s potential finish ranging from 10th to 12th. For Montreal, the league describes a Decision Day matchup as CF Montréal hosts Vancouver Whitecaps FC, where Montreal is looking to secure a point—or a slip by Sporting Kansas City—to avoid finishing last in the Supporters’ Shield table and “winning” the Wooden Spoon.

MLS concludes its Decision Day rundown with matches involving teams finishing in the bottom positions. It says Atlanta’s final match is a trip to Red Bull New York, with the Five Stripes finishing in either 13th or 14th, and it describes D.C. United’s season-ending contest versus NYCFC under head coach René Weiler, with D.C. expected to finish 13th or 14th. For Vancouver’s opponent, MLS positions the result in Montreal as tied directly to the Supporters’ Shield standings table consequences rather than playoff seeding.

With MLS’ framing that the East’s playoff fields are already clinched, the practical impact of Decision Day centers on who gets to start higher, who hosts specific rounds, and which clubs avoid the Wild Card altogether. The league’s scenarios make clear that several outcomes—particularly around the No. 2 seed, the No. 4 seed, and the race for seventh place—are all intertwined within the same final matchday window.
