USMNT beats Chile 4-2 at St. Louis CITY SC’s Energizer Park to keep September friendly momentum

The United States men’s national team kept its momentum going in the September/October international friendly window with a 4-2 victory over Chile on Tuesday night at St. Louis CITY SC’s Energizer Park. It was the second straight win for the USMNT after posting a 4-1 result over Peru on Saturday at Orlando City’s Inter.co Stadium.

The match followed the USMNT’s schedule of four international friendlies during the extended September/October window. Tuesday’s win ensured the United States entered the next stage of its friendlies with back-to-back victories against South American opponents.

Chris Richards scored the decisive goal for the United States in the 72nd minute, finishing off a play started by a corner kick taken by Sebastian Berhalter. Richards attacked the delivery with a powerful header to put the USMNT ahead for what proved to be the match-winner.

Sebastian Berhalter also had a hand in the opening moments of the scoring, giving the USMNT the lead in the 37th minute. The former Vancouver Whitecaps FC star received a pass from Sergiño Dest, used a dummy—created from a clever touch—to get separation, and then struck a first-time shot inside the far post to find the back of the net for the second consecutive match.

Chile responded before halftime through Diego Ulloa. Ulloa leveled in first-half stoppage time by knocking the ball in following a scramble in front of goal, turning momentum late in the first half and setting up an eventful second period.

Early in the second half, Chile regained control as Maxi Gutiérrez put La Roja in front. Gutiérrez scored with a well-struck shot inside the far post, restoring Chile’s advantage soon after the restart.

Julian Hall responded immediately for the United States. Hall answered Gutiérrez’s goal with a glancing header, and the goal also marked a personal milestone: the USMNT announced Hall as the youngest player to score in his first two USMNT appearances.

Richards then made sure the United States closed the game strongly. He came off the bench and scored again in the second half, adding to the USMNT’s lead after Chile’s earlier adjustments and after the match had swung back in the Americans’ favor.

The USMNT’s fourth goal arrived in second-half stoppage time as 17-year-old Mathis Albert added a late finish. Albert’s strike capped the scoring and extended the win, making him the youngest goalscorer in USMNT history, according to the game report.

With the 4-2 result, the United States continued to demonstrate scoring depth across multiple periods, combining contributions from established national-team players and younger debutants. Tuesday’s performance also reinforced the importance of this friendly stretch, coming just days after the USMNT’s 4-1 victory over Peru earlier in the same international window.

The win over Chile was played at St. Louis CITY SC’s Energizer Park, giving the USMNT another opportunity to use the extended September/October schedule to test different combinations as the four-match friendly window continues.
