George Russell described a “frustrating” opening-lap problem in the Mexico City Grand Prix that he said ultimately cost him his best chance at victory. The Mercedes driver said the incident left him without full deployment down the main straight after a strong start, and that loss of pace quickly erased his early momentum.

Russell’s weekend featured a competitive Qualifying session in which he missed pole position to Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton by just 0.009 seconds. At the start of the race, he initially gained places at lights out, but a deployment-related deployment problem that affected his car’s energy use forced him to drop multiple positions, pushing him into traffic early on.

From there, Russell fought for fifth place with Isack Hadjar. During that battle, Russell tapped Hadjar’s rear, causing Hadjar to spin. After the incident, Russell was assessed a 10-second time penalty for the collision, a result he said further narrowed his path back into contention.

Russell continued his effort after the penalty, holding off McLaren’s Lando Norris before pitting. He then exited the pit lane into a different race situation: Russell’s stop took longer than planned, and he said the extended duration cost him fifth place in the race. It also meant a larger swing in the Drivers’ Championship standings, with Russell dropping to second as Mercedes team mate Kimi Antonelli secured the championship lead for good by finishing third.

Russell was unequivocal in his assessment of what the weekend meant for his title hopes. “Firstly, congratulations to Kimi on a thoroughly deserved championship,” he said. “He has done a fantastic job this season and can be incredibly proud of what he has achieved.” He added that his own race was “very disappointing,” explaining that he made a good start before an issue outside of his control prevented him from deploying fully down the straight.

Russell said the circumstances were difficult to accept because the problem came despite his preparation and early race execution. “Unfortunately, it was a very disappointing race on my side,” he stated. “I made a good start and was in a strong position, but then we suffered an issue which caused me to not have full deployment down the straight. That cost us a lot of positions and ultimately took us out of contention for a strong result.” He also emphasized his focus moving forward, saying Mercedes would “reset after this weekend” with the aim of returning stronger in Brazil and continuing to pursue the Constructors’ Championship.

The comments came amid a wider reliability theme in Russell’s season. The post notes that his struggles have included other deployment-related problems; as an example, it references Belgium, where Russell also faced an issue that contributed to contact with another driver. After Mexico City, Team Principal Toto Wolff said Mercedes bore responsibility for the problem on the first straight and acknowledged the impact on Russell’s mindset.

Wolff, speaking to written media after the race, said he checked on Russell immediately after the event and described the situation as difficult for the team’s driver. “I saw George after the race on the scales and obviously he is distraught about the situation,” Wolff said. He added that the team had the pace to challenge for a result, but that “we let him down on the first straight,” pointing to energy delivery not meeting expectations. Wolff also referenced how moments like this can be “catastrophic” for a driver in a season where timing and reliability can define outcomes.

With Antonelli’s third-place finish confirming the Drivers’ Championship, Russell’s sixth-place result leaves Mercedes facing an immediate priority: closing out the Constructors’ battle while trying to prevent recurring energy and deployment issues that have interrupted his races at key moments.
