Nashville SC defeat CF Montréal to win 2026 MLS Supporters’ Shield, secure top seed in Audi 2026 MLS Cup Playoffs
Image accompanying the official MLS announcement.Nashville SC won the 2026 MLS Supporters’ Shield, claiming Major League Soccer’s best regular-season record for the first time in club history following a 2-0 victory at CF Montréal on Saturday afternoon. The Supporters’ Shield is awarded to the team that finishes the regular season with the top points total in MLS, and Nashville secured the trophy on Matchday 32.
With the Shield capture, Nashville earned the Eastern Conference’s No. 1 seed in the Audi 2026 MLS Cup Playoffs. As the top seed, the club receives home-field advantage during the postseason and will play at GEODIS Park through MLS Cup presented by Audi on Dec. 18 if it advances to the final.
Nashville will open its playoff campaign against the East Wild Card winner. MLS’s playoff bracket pairs the conference wild-card teams into a Round One match-up, with the Shield No. 1 seed set to face the winner of the East Wild Card series (No. 8 versus No. 9 seed) in the opening round.
The Round One Best-of-3 Series are scheduled to be played from Friday, Nov. 20 to Wednesday, Dec. 2, with the league set to determine the specific game format and key dates within that window as part of the postseason schedule.
Beyond the immediate postseason implications, the club also qualified for the 2027 Concacaf Champions Cup. That qualification is a direct additional consequence of Nashville’s league performance and Shield-winning regular season.
Head coach B.J. Callaghan’s group enters the playoffs as one of the most consistent sides in MLS’ 31-season history of Supporters’ Shield winners. Nashville are one of 18 clubs across MLS seasons to win the Supporters’ Shield since the league’s inaugural campaign in 1996, adding the franchise to a select list of regular-season champions.
Callaghan’s Shield-winning season further extends Nashville’s progress over the past year. The club previously captured the 2025 US Open Cup, the franchise’s first-ever title, and the coach led the Coyotes to the 2026 Concacaf Champions Cup semifinals this past spring.
In addition to the Shield, Nashville’s regular-season run put it in range of MLS single-season points history. The team is pursuing the MLS single-season points record of 74, established by Inter Miami CF in 2024, and Nashville still has three regular-season games remaining to attempt to rewrite the record books.
At the time of the Shield announcement, Nashville held 70 points with a 21W-3L-7D record. The club also noted that its three remaining regular-season matches could determine whether it reaches or surpasses the 74-point benchmark.
Nashville’s attack and overall production are tied to the club’s Designated Player trio, which the league highlighted as having combined for 63 goal contributions. Among those contributors, star striker Sam Surridge leads in goals with 18 and adds two assists, while former Landon Donovan MLS MVP Hany Mukhtar has been the club’s top goal-contribution producer with 17 goals and eight assists.
The announcement also pointed to Cristian Espinoza as a major factor in Nashville’s offensive depth. As a blockbuster offseason signing, Espinoza has recorded four goals and 14 assists as he has “hit the ground running,” according to the league’s season summary provided with the Supporters’ Shield win.
On the defensive side, the club’s regular-season profile includes record-setting emphasis around goals allowed. Nashville’s back line has been led by USMNT goalkeeper Brian Schwake and defender Andy Náj ar, with both named as part of the group that helped the Coyotes concede the fewest goals in MLS this season, at 23.
Those performances were also recognized through league all-star selections. The announcement stated that Schwake, along with Náj ar, joined Mukhtar and Surridge as 2026 MLS All-Stars, reflecting Nashville’s mix of star power and consistency across both ends of the field.
With the Supporters’ Shield now secured, Nashville will shift from regular-season objectives to the postseason path laid out by the Audi 2026 MLS Cup Playoffs schedule. The club’s next step is navigating Round One against the East Wild Card winner as the East’s top seed, while continuing to benefit from home-field advantage at GEODIS Park through the run of games that culminates in MLS Cup presented by Audi on Dec. 18 if it reaches the final.
The Shield victory at CF Montréal also confirms Nashville’s status as the club to set early postseason expectations. The announcement noted that Nashville were the first club to clinch a playoff spot this season in mid-September, and the Shield is the next milestone in a year that has already included continental progress and the 2025 US Open Cup trophy.
Nashville’s achievement places the club alongside other Supporters’ Shield champions dating back to 1996. For supporters, the immediate takeaway is clear: the Coyotes have earned the league’s top regular-season standing, home-field advantage into December, and an additional berth into the 2027 Concacaf Champions Cup.
The Supporters’ Shield win also shapes the postseason picture for the rest of the Eastern Conference. By locking the No. 1 seed, Nashville’s first-round opponent will be determined by the results of the East Wild Card series between the No. 8 and No. 9 seeds, and the Best-of-3 Round One series will begin within the Nov. 20 to Dec. 2 window.
