Ugo Ugochukwu reflects on dramatic Formula 3 title win in Madrid after overturning points deficit

Ugo Ugochukwu has reflected on winning the FIA Formula 3 Drivers’ title in the final race of the season in Madrid, describing the days after the championship as calmer than the preceding rounds at Monza and Madrid. According to the driver’s comments, he and title rival Freddie Slater entered the last race level on points, allowing Ugochukwu to claim the championship by overturning the deficit he had been carrying earlier in the campaign.

The American became the first driver from the USA to win top honours in FIA single-seater racing’s third tier, and he said the sense of achievement has gradually sunk in. Ugochukwu added that he had time to look back at the winning day and celebrations after securing the title a week earlier.

In the earlier stages of the season, Ugochukwu led the standings for much of the campaign, but after reaching Budapest and the summer break, his grip loosened as Slater moved closer in the fight for the crown. He described Monza as a turning point, saying that a difficult start to the penultimate weekend left him 23rd on the grid after qualifying issues and a grid penalty.

Despite that setback, Ugochukwu said he recovered strongly across the weekend: he drove to P13 in the Sprint Race and then finished P8 in Sunday’s Feature even after early contact pushed him to the back of the field. He framed that comeback as the confidence boost that carried into Madrid.

Looking ahead to the next step, Ugochukwu referenced plans for Formula 2 and noted that Slater has already been confirmed on the 2027 F2 grid. Until further decisions are confirmed, he said he is focused on continuing to raise his performance level, while calling Melbourne “one of the strongest races of the year” as an early marker in his 2026 campaign.
