Hinchcliffe said the key issue now is understanding “how to close that gap to Lando,” arguing that the difference within McLaren has been consistent “all season long,” with Norris continuing to improve while Piastri has not sustained the same trajectory.

Palmer added that Piastri may have room to work without the full pressure of a championship fight, while also raising concerns about whether the handling characteristics of this year’s car align with Piastri’s driving preferences. He suggested Piastri retains the ability to win—adding that Baku is a circuit where he took his second career win in 2024—but he described the broader pattern as one of limited consistency against Norris. Palmer said that beyond improving this season, a reset for the coming winter could be part of the solution.

The episode’s discussion was framed as analysis rather than a new sporting development, with Palmer and Hinchcliffe presenting factors they believe could influence Piastri’s prospects specifically at Baku and his ability to re-establish front-running competitiveness at McLaren.
