Colapinto apologises to Alpine after Azerbaijan GP Safety Car restart crash with Gasly
Image accompanying the official F1 announcement.Franco Colapinto has apologised to Alpine and to his team mate Pierre Gasly after a mistake at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix eliminated both cars on a Safety Car restart. According to Formula 1, Alpine had been on course for a double points finish in Baku, with Gasly running in P7 and Colapinto in P10 when the race restarted late.
The Formula 1 report states that, with the field bunched entering Turn 1 as racing resumed, Colapinto misjudged his braking and locked up, moving to the inside before contacting Gasly’s car on the apex. The pair then spun to the outside of the circuit, and Lando Norris was collected in the process, leaving all three drivers eliminated from the race.
Colapinto’s apology was delivered to Formula 1 following the incident. The Argentine said: “Just bit of disappointment… Just a big sorry to all of them, to the factory, to Pierre of course,” adding that “I took him out” and that “Big sorry, it shouldn't happen.”
