The Philadelphia Union have agreed to keep defender Neil Pierre in Philadelphia longer, signing the 19-year-old center back to a new contract through the 2030-31 season with an option for the 2031-32 campaign, the club announced Thursday. The extension ties Pierre’s future to the Union as the team continues building around its young talent and development pipeline.

Pierre originally joined the Union as a homegrown player ahead of the 2025 season. The defender then moved to Danish club Lyngby Boldklub on loan for the first half of the 2026 campaign, a period that the club says formed part of his progression before his return to Philadelphia.

After returning from loan, Pierre has established himself as a regular starter, according to the Union. In the club’s 2026 season context provided with the announcement, Pierre recorded 4 goals and 1 assist in 14 games, contributing as Philadelphia pushed up the Eastern Conference table during a “historic unbeaten streak” described by the club as 12 wins, 0 losses, and 3 draws since the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

The contract extension also arrives as Pierre’s international profile grows. The Union’s announcement states that he recently earned his first three caps with the United States men’s national team, including appearances alongside teammates Cavan Sullivan and Frankie Westfield to begin the 2030 World Cup cycle.

Philadelphia also pointed to league-wide recognition for Pierre’s development. The club said Pierre placed No. 7 on MLS’s annual 22 Under 22 Rankings, which recognize the league’s top young players, placing him among the younger generation of prospects highlighted by the league.

In the Union’s statement, Philadelphia sporting director Jon Scheer framed the extension as both recognition and continued investment in Pierre’s pathway through the organization. Scheer said Pierre is “one of the brightest young center backs in our league” and credited his ability to capitalize on opportunities throughout his development with the club.

Scheer also cited specific aspects of Pierre’s game, describing his “physical profile,” his “ability to defend aggressively in 1v1 situations,” and his “composure and confidence on the ball.” He added that Pierre has “taken significant steps forward this season,” calling the extension another example of a pathway from the academy through Union II to the first team.

With the new agreement, the Union confirmed their intent to support Pierre’s continued development while retaining him through the 2030-31 season and retaining a contractual option for the following year. The club’s announcement did not specify salary terms or additional performance incentives, but it clearly extends the commitment to the center back beyond the 2026 campaign as Philadelphia looks to sustain its competitiveness in the Eastern Conference.
