Philadelphia Union re-acquire USMNT defender Mark McKenzie as Designated Player

The Philadelphia Union announced Wednesday that it has re-acquired homegrown defender Mark McKenzie as a Designated Player. The club said the agreement takes effect in January 2027, and that McKenzie will remain under contract through the 2029-30 MLS season with a club option for 2030-31.

McKenzie, a U.S. international and 2026 FIFA World Cup participant, is currently with FC Toulouse in French Ligue 1. The Union’s announcement frames the move as a return to the club where he previously developed and established himself with the first team.

In describing the roster impact, Philadelphia Union sporting director Jon Scheer said bringing McKenzie back is a significant moment that reflects the values and ambition of the club and the city. Scheer also noted that McKenzie “came through our Academy,” established himself with the first team, and has achieved success at the highest level for both club and country.

Scheer further said the club sees the acquisition as both an exciting opportunity and a “critical period” for the Union as it builds for the future. He added that adding a player he described as being in the prime of his career—along with leadership and a commitment to continued growth—will strengthen the club’s foundation as it pursues team goals.

McKenzie previously spent three seasons with the Union from 2018 to 2020, appearing in 48 regular-season matches and recording two goals and three assists, according to the club. The Union said that in 2020 he helped Philly win the Supporters’ Shield, earned MLS Best XI honours, and was an MLS Defender of the Year finalist.

The Union also confirmed McKenzie’s European pathway after leaving MLS in January 2021 for Belgium’s KRC Genk, before he joined FC Toulouse in 2024. During his time in Europe, Philadelphia said McKenzie produced six goals and seven assists in 200 appearances across all competitions and won a Belgian Cup.

Internationally, the Union noted that McKenzie has 30 caps for the United States men’s national team and is a two-time Concacaf Nations League champion. The club’s announcement places that experience alongside the expected return to Philadelphia ahead of the January 2027 effective date.

McKenzie said in the Union’s statement that Philadelphia has “always been home” to him and that the club, community and supporters shaped him as both a player and a person. He said that while he left to challenge himself in Europe and represent his country, he continued to carry Philadelphia and the Union with him throughout his career.

In comments included with the announcement, McKenzie said he is excited to “come home,” wear the club’s badge again, and help build on the Union’s success. He added that he is grateful for the journey so far and is looking forward to reconnecting with the city, teammates and supporters when he begins his next chapter in January.

With the contract structured through 2029-30 and an option for 2030-31, the signing gives the Union a long-term plan for a key central defensive role starting in 2027. The club did not provide additional details on roster allocation beyond stating McKenzie will return as a Designated Player.
