Norris and Piastri reflect on McLaren collision in Singapore Sprint
Image accompanying the official F1 announcement.Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri have offered their accounts of the clash between the two McLaren drivers during the Singapore Grand Prix Sprint in Marina Bay, which took place under mixed conditions after heavy rain just before the start.
F1 stated that Norris and Piastri had been running closely together in fourth and fifth as Charles Leclerc led the pair’s immediate fight behind him. Leclerc struggled on worn intermediate tyres, keeping the McLarens bunched and setting up the final-lap opportunity.
According to the Formula 1 report, Norris launched an attack on Piastri into Turn 5 on the last lap, aiming to secure fourth place. The reigning World Champion dived to the inside and drew alongside, but as Norris began to come back out through the corner, contact occurred when Norris’s left-front tyre caught Piastri’s right-rear tyre.
The collision sent both drivers into a spin. Piastri hit the wall and retired, while Norris was able to resume and reach the chequered flag to finish the Sprint in P8. The incident was subsequently placed under investigation by the stewards after the race.
Asked about the moment, Norris said the pace was strong and that being “stuck” behind Leclerc created a clear chance late into Turn 5. He added that the gap closed more than he would have liked, which forced him to back out through the corner to avoid the collision, though he believed “there still was one.” Norris also said that he felt he had the right to attempt the move and that the team would review the rest together.
Piastri, for his part, said he needed to look at the incident again, stating he did not see Norris at the apex. He added that he checked behind into the corner and believed Norris was a reasonable distance back for a move into Turn 5, leaving the technical and situational review to the team.
