One of MLS’s fiercest rivalries returns to Sunday Night Soccer presented by Continental Tire as FC Cincinnati hosts Columbus Crew for Matchday 31 in a key late-season Hell is Real clash, with both teams still shaping their positions around the Audi 2026 MLS Cup Playoffs picture.

Cincinnati enters the stretch run after a Wednesday 3-2 home defeat to the New England Revolution. The Orange and Blue squandered an early lead in the match, despite goals from Tom Barlow and Kévin Denkey.

Following that loss, FC Cincinnati is holding onto the final Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference. The club is aiming to solidify its place above the Audi 2026 MLS Cup Playoffs line while simultaneously turning the rivalry against Columbus into a standings advantage.

The Crew arrive on the heels of a Wednesday 3-1 win over Charlotte FC. Columbus rallied from an early deficit, with goals credited to Brais Méndez, Anass Zaroury and Taha Habroune in the comeback.

According to the league’s match coverage, Columbus generated significant attacking volume in that win, taking a club-record 33 shots, including 14 on target, to secure their third victory in four matches as they keep their playoff hopes in motion.

In the context of the Eastern Conference standings described by MLS, the matchup also carries direct playoff math for Columbus. The Crew are four points back of Cincinnati and the East’s final Wild Card spot, and a strong result at Nippert Stadium would keep them within striking distance late in the season.

The rivalry’s season sweep remains on the line for Columbus as well. The Crew have already earned a 2-1 home win against Cincinnati in July, a match that featured post-match fireworks following a late sending-off involving Gerardo Valenzuela.

On the matchup outlook, MLS shared market insights current as of Friday, Oct. 16 at 9 am ET, indicating Cincinnati has been given a 44% edge versus Columbus at 35% heading into this Sunday night meeting.

With Cincinnati trying to defend its Wild Card spot and Columbus attempting to close a four-point gap, Sunday Night Soccer adds a high-leverage element to Matchday 31 as the two clubs meet in a late-season Hell is Real battle.
