Sainz and Albon cautious as Williams prepares FW48 upgrade debut at Azerbaijan Grand Prix

Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon have previewed Williams’ major FW48 upgrade package, which the team says will finally be available to both drivers this Thursday at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The upgrade has been in development since the start of the season, following Williams’ decision to concentrate most of its R&D effort on a single major performance “hit,” centered on a revised and lighter chassis and a new aero package for the FW48.

While the revised chassis and aero changes are expected to deliver an immediate lap time gain, Sainz cautioned that Williams faces a steep gap to the current midfield leaders Alpine, Racing Bulls and Audi, all of whom have also progressed since their own Baku updates were approved. He suggested that even a strong improvement from the previous specification may not automatically translate into a major climb in the pecking order this weekend.

Sainz pointed to the wider development context, saying Williams’ deficit has accumulated over earlier races and that the team may need until next year, and possibly into the first half of it, to reach a performance level where it reflects the capacity they believe the team can show. He also noted that Baku’s characteristics could be more favorable than recent tracks where Williams has struggled more clearly against the midfield.

Albon echoed that caution, stating the upgrade is significant “if they work,” and emphasizing the importance of the weight reduction and ballast situation heading into the event. He said Williams has completed a mid-season chassis change at the factory and that the car’s updated systems and balance are designed to be validated first through simulation, while acknowledging that sim-to-track correlation can vary.

Both drivers also underlined that the competitive challenge remains a moving target, with midfield rivals continuing to bring new parts frequently. Their comments frame the Azerbaijan upgrade as a step in the right direction and a test of whether Williams’ processes and performance gains translate on track, rather than a certainty of immediate points scoring.

Williams’ major package is set to debut at Azerbaijan this weekend, with Thursday track activity serving as the first opportunity for Sainz and Albon to run the new FW48 specification after the team’s earlier development focus. The drivers’ outlook remains cautious as they weigh the expected gains against the continuing pace improvements from competitors in the midfield.
