Evander sparks FC Cincinnati’s 2-0 win over D.C. United as MLS playoff chase tightens
Image accompanying the official MLS announcement.FC Cincinnati tightened its MLS Cup Playoffs race with a 2-0 win over D.C. United at Audi Field, with Brazilian midfielder Evander driving the outcome on Saturday. MLS announced the result as part of a key set of Eastern Conference swings, noting that Cincinnati followed up another recent victory over United and moved deeper into the playoff mix.
Evander opened the scoring in the match by scoring a long-range goal at Audi Field, described in the league report as a “golazo” and highlighted as a signature, from-distance finish. The goal came in the 35th minute and ended a nearly two-month scoring drought for Cincinnati that had stretched across seven games without a goal.
After taking the lead, Cincinnati added the second goal through Tom Barlow, with MLS attributing the assist to Evander. The play made it the midfielder’s 15th assist of the 2026 MLS season, and MLS also credited him with 29 total goal contributions entering the weekend, built from 14 goals and 15 assists.
The league also pointed to a historic consistency milestone for Evander. MLS stated that he became only the second player in league history, alongside Lionel Messi, to record at least 15 assists in three consecutive seasons. The comparison places Evander among the most productive creators to have reached that assist benchmark repeatedly in MLS play.
FC Cincinnati head coach Pat Noonan commented on Evander’s impact following the match, telling reporters, “That’s Evander being Evander,” according to the league report. Noonan’s remarks framed the performance as a continuation of the role Evander has played in the team’s attacking production this season.
With the win, Cincinnati reached 42 points and moved into seventh place in the Eastern Conference standings, the league said. MLS also reported that the result was Cincinnati’s second victory in four days against D.C. United, reinforcing the short turnaround that can define late-season playoff positioning.
The league report emphasized that Cincinnati’s postseason chances hinge on Evander’s output over the club’s remaining regular-season schedule. MLS stated that his production has left him one goal contribution shy of reaching at least 30 for a third straight season, a benchmark built to underline the scale of his season-long involvement in goals.
Looking ahead, MLS said Cincinnati will aim to secure a postseason berth across its final three regular-season games. The next match is a trip to face Inter Miami CF, described in the league update as the defending champion team and led by Lionel Messi, in a contest scheduled for Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. ET.
MLS also indicated that all of Cincinnati’s remaining opponents are above the playoff line in the Eastern Conference, meaning the schedule does not offer a straightforward path through lower-ranked competition. The report therefore framed the rest of the season as a period where results are likely to shape both Cincinnati’s position and the broader standings in the East.
Evander addressed the urgency of the final games in remarks included in the league report. He said, “We understand the situation we’re in right now. We cannot choose games anymore, we have to win. Whether playing at home or playing away, we can't lose points anymore,” describing the team’s approach as it chases a playoff spot.
