On Oct. 15, 2026, the Toronto Maple Leafs acquired forward Aatu Räty from the Vancouver Canucks for Jacob Quillan and Brandon Buhr.
The Story
Toronto Maple Leafs general manager John Chayka has completed a trade with the Vancouver Canucks to acquire recently-waived forward Aatu Räty.
The Maple Leafs acquired Räty, described as a $13 million forward, from Vancouver on Thursday afternoon.
In return, Toronto received forwards Brandon Buhr and Jacob Quillan.
Räty had been placed on waivers by the Canucks and went unclaimed.
Räty’s path to the NHL began with strong results in Finland’s top league as a teenager, when he made his Liiga debut at 16 and scored in his first professional game. He entered the 2021 NHL Draft as a projected high pick, but his stock dropped after a difficult season with Kärpät, where he posted six points in 35 games.
Räty was signed by the New York Islanders in 2021 and made his NHL debut during the 2022-23 season, scoring his first goal against Florida. After 12 games with New York, he was traded to the Canucks in the January 2023 deal that sent Bo Horvat to the Islanders.
With Vancouver, Räty later helped the Abbotsford Canucks win the 2025 Calder Cup. In 66 games with the Canucks in 2025-26, he recorded four goals and 10 assists.
Over 114 career NHL games, Räty has scored 13 goals and added 15 assists.
