The Vancouver Canucks placed Matthew Stienburg on waivers while Trey Fix-Wolansky, Cole Clayton and Jimmy Schuldt cleared and the group is expected to report to Abbotsford.
The Story
The Vancouver Canucks have placed forward Matthew Stienburg on waivers, a move that comes after the team reassigned multiple players earlier in the week and continued trimming its NHL roster during the 2026 pre-season.
At the same time, the Canucks said Trey Fix-Wolansky, Cole Clayton and Jimmy Schuldt—players among those re-assigned the day before—have all cleared waivers. If Stienburg also clears, the Canucks expect him to join the three skaters in reporting to their American Hockey League affiliate, the Abbotsford Canucks.
The waivers and reassignments follow a broader roster reset the Canucks completed after their most recent round of cuts, during which 15 players were reassigned to their respective professional and junior clubs.
Among those assigned to the AHL in the latest set of cuts were forwards Riley Patterson, Ty Mueller, Ilya Safonov, Ben Berard and Chase Wouters, along with defencemen Kirill Kudryavtsev, Sawyer Mynio and Isaac Belliveau.
The timing of Stienburg’s waiver placement reflects how quickly training camp prospects and depth players must move through roster decisions as the pre-season progresses. The forward had drawn attention during Canucks training camp and performed particularly well during the team’s first pre-season game against the Seattle Kraken on September 19.
Before signing with Vancouver during this year’s free-agency period, Stienburg spent nearly four seasons in the Colorado Avalanche organization.
With another forward re-assigned following the Canucks’ roster moves, the team’s remaining group of players competing for a full-time opening-night roster role is now down to three forwards: Arshdeep Bains, Braeden Cootes and Jonathan Lekkerimäki. The latter two were set to play in Vancouver’s game against the Edmonton Oilers.
Vancouver’s next pre-season game is scheduled to start at 6:00 p.m. PT against Edmonton, as the Canucks continue evaluating their lineup while winding down cuts ahead of the regular season.
