Sarbraj Singh Kahlon of OMNI News won the Excellence in Multilingual Journalism award at the 40th Jack Webster Awards in Vancouver.

The Story

OMNI News had a major win at the 40th Jack Webster Awards held Monday at the Hyatt Regency in Vancouver.

Sarbraj Singh Kahlon received the Excellence in Multilingual Journalism award for reporting produced with Allan Chek, Kristin Johnson and Sonia Kalra.

The award-winning story examined how extortion fears among Vancouver builders drove policy changes at City Hall.

In his speech, Kahlon thanked his mentors, leaders, family and friends, and also said: “On my way here tonight, I thought of everyone who has trusted me with their stories. I carry that trust with humility and gratitude.”

Kahlon also acknowledged his roots, saying: “With Remembrance Day approaching, I am reminded of those who served and sacrificed. In 1897, Sikh soldiers passed through Vancouver. Their journey became a part of Canadian story.”

He added: “Our duty is to give back, serve Canada, and leave it stronger for those who follow.”

The Jack Webster Awards mark their 40th anniversary this year, recognizing the best of BC journalism annually.
