EmergencyInfoBC says no tsunami warnings or damage reports followed three earthquakes recorded off B.C.’s South Coast within 24 hours.

EmergencyInfoBC reported that no tsunami alerts were issued after three earthquakes were measured off British Columbia’s South Coast within the last 24 hours, and there were no damage reports linked to the temblors.
The first quake was a magnitude 4.9 event recorded shortly before 8 p.m. Sunday, about 170 kilometres from Port Hardy, according to the EmergencyInfoBC information.
Less than two hours later, a second earthquake of magnitude 5.4 was measured about 207 kilometres from Port Hardy.
Shortly after 2 a.m. Monday, a third quake was recorded at magnitude 5.2, about 166 kilometres from Port Hardy.
EmergencyInfoBC indicated there were no reports of people feeling the earthquakes.
Even without reports of damage or impacts, EmergencyInfoBC advised residents in the region to be prepared to drop and take cover if another tremor occurs.
The repeated measurements reinforce how active the offshore region can be, with Climate Ready BC noting that British Columbia records thousands of earthquakes each year on average.
Climate Ready BC also said earthquakes strong enough to cause structural damage occur about once per decade.
Earthquakes Canada states that quakes measuring magnitude 5.4 or lower are often felt, though they rarely cause damage.
While these recent events were not linked to reported effects, they were described as the largest quakes recorded in at least the past 30 days, underscoring their relative size compared with the more typical background activity in the area.
