TELUS posts Q3 loss after $800M non-cash charge tied to Telus Health

TELUS reported a loss for the quarter ended Sept. 30 after taking an $800-million non-cash charge related to Telus Health.

The Story

TELUS Corp. reported a loss in its third quarter after taking an $800-million non-cash charge related to Telus Health.

For the quarter ended Sept. 30, the company said its loss attributable to common shares was $667 million, or 42 cents per share, compared with a profit of $493 million, or 32 cents per share, in the same quarter a year earlier.

On an adjusted basis, TELUS said it earned 16 cents per share in the latest quarter, compared with an adjusted profit of 24 cents per share in the third quarter of 2025.

TELUS reported operating revenue and other income totalled $5.03 billion for the quarter, down from $5.11 billion a year ago.

The quarter’s results were released alongside a transformation strategy unveiled Friday, with the company saying the plan is intended to strengthen its financial foundation, improve operational discipline and control costs, and deploy resources for profitable and sustainable growth and returns.

TELUS president and CEO Victor Dodig said the strategy includes monetizing non-core assets, with near-term priority on Telus Health and Telus Agriculture & Consumer Goods, and said those businesses are “probably best in the hands of other capital providers over time.”

Dodig said TELUS is already in “advanced discussions on one Telus Health asset” with a prospective buyer.

He also said the company expects to find $900 million in annual cost savings by the end of 2028, with about 80 per cent of the cash savings coming from the core telecom side and the balance from Telus’ global platform businesses.

As part of the telecom-focused outlook, TELUS said total telecom subscriber connections for the quarter reached 18.3 million, up from 17.2 million in the third quarter of 2025, and it added 84,000 net mobile phone subscribers during the quarter.

TELUS said its mobile phone churn rate was 1.01 per cent for the quarter, improving from 1.11 per cent a year ago, and that mobile phone average revenue per user was $57.22, flat year-over-year.

The company reported it signed up 10,000 net internet customers, compared with a year-ago figure that implied a decline of 30,000 year-over-year, and it reported 289,000 connected device net additions, an increase of 120,000 year-over-year.

TELUS noted earlier this year it announced plans for three B.C. facilities to support its digital infrastructure, after launching a factory in Rimouski, Que. a year ago, and said it plans to leverage its fibre network to provide connectivity to data centres not owned by TELUS.
