Argonauts rookie Tyler Kahmann credits quick learning for strong start after settling in Toronto

Toronto receiver Tyler Kahmann has recorded 77 catches for 1,092 yards and eight touchdowns as a CFL rookie after adjusting to life in Toronto.

The Story

Toronto receiver Tyler Kahmann says the biggest adjustment in his rookie CFL season has been life in Canada’s largest city, where he has had to adapt to a faster pace and a different way of getting around.

The six-foot-three, 206-pound receiver has been a quick study for the Toronto Argonauts, posting 77 catches for 1,092 yards and eight touchdowns in his first CFL season. Kahmann, who is from Haysville, Kansas, said Toronto’s daily routine has been noticeably different from his hometown, where travel times stay consistent regardless of the time of day.

Kahmann also credited his success to preparation and the support around him. In particular, he said he has been working with quarterback Chad Kelly, including watching film during training camp, and he described the connection as important for being able to make plays.

Toronto’s offence has included more than one major contributor as the season has progressed, and Kahmann is one of four Argonauts receivers to reach at least 1,000 receiving yards. He joined Damonte Coxie, as well as Canadians David Ungerer III and Kevin Mital, in that group, a franchise first for Toronto.

Kahmann’s rookie season has come with stops and starts off the field as well as on it. He joined Toronto in September 2025 but was released the following month, then re-signed with the Argonauts last January before returning to the practice roster on May 31. He then landed on the active roster for Toronto’s season-opening 37-30 loss to the Montreal Alouettes, recording six catches for 106 yards and a touchdown, and has remained a starter.

Despite the earlier roster moves, Kahmann said he has stayed focused on earning opportunities. He described his approach as working hard in practice and being ready for what happens in a “opportunistic business,” and he added that he believes results follow preparation.

The receiver’s background includes time in the NFL system with the Indianapolis Colts. Kahmann signed as an undrafted free agent with the Colts in 2025, spent time on the practice roster after being released, and was let go the following day. He played collegiately at Emporia State from 2019 to 2024, finishing 47 games with 282 catches for 3,686 yards and 54 touchdowns.

With the longer, wider CFL field and unlimited motion, Kahmann said he believes the Canadian game matches his style, noting that the extra space and the way zones and middle-field routes develop can help a receiver work in rhythm with the quarterback.

Looking ahead to the post-season, Toronto hosts the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the East semifinal on Saturday afternoon. The teams split their season series 1-1, with both games played in Manitoba due to the World Cup, and Kahmann had five catches for 80 yards and two touchdowns versus Winnipeg.

As he weighs the possibility of ending his rookie season with top honours, Kahmann said he takes the process one day at a time while also thinking about what the team is chasing. He was described as the overwhelming favourite to claim the CFL’s top rookie award. If he wins, it would mark the first time an Argonaut has earned that honour since cornerback Qwan’tez Stiggers in 2023.
