Filip Hronek says he won’t “run away” from Canucks rebuild, despite struggles and tough expectations

Filip Hronek says he plans to stay with the Vancouver Canucks and help the organization through its rebuild, despite a difficult season and high expectations.

The Story

Filip Hronek said he is committed to staying with the Vancouver Canucks and supporting the rebuild rather than trying to “run away right away.”

Hronek’s comments came after what the statement describes as a difficult 2025-26 season, when Vancouver finished last in the Western Conference and made several difficult trades. The club also made coaching and management changes following the team’s performance.

Hronek said he signed a contract to stay long-term and that he knew he wanted to be in Vancouver when he agreed to it. He said winning matters, but added he believes the Canucks can build something special.

The defenceman also described his leadership approach as “lead by example,” saying he plans to help younger players. He said he has enjoyed what he has seen from newer additions and that the team’s atmosphere has been upbeat as camp gets underway.

Hronek is entering his fourth season with Vancouver. He was acquired from Detroit in March 2023 in a package centred on first- and second-round draft picks.

Hronek was drafted by Detroit in 2016. The statement says he came off a standout season with the Saginaw Spirit in which he recorded 14 goals and 47 assists in 59 games and was named the team’s MVP and Best Defenseman.

The statement says Hronek made his NHL debut with Detroit in 2018 and was named Rookie of the Year after leading the team’s rookies with 23 points in 46 games.

It also says he later signed a three-year contract extension in 2021 before being traded to Vancouver.

According to the statement, Hronek signed an eight-year, $58 million contract in 2024, with a $7.25 million salary cap hit. It adds that, as of the time of the report, his career total was 48 goals and 239 assists in 533 games, with one goal and one assist in 13 Stanley Cup playoff games.

Training camp is scheduled to open later this week, and the Canucks will play their first exhibition game Saturday against the Seattle Kraken at Climate Pledge Arena.
