Andreas Almgren won the men’s New York City Marathon debut and Sheila Chepkirui won the women’s race for the second time.
The Story
Sweden’s Andreas Almgren won the men’s race of the New York City Marathon in his debut on Sunday, pulling away from Italy’s Yemaneberhan Crippa in the final mile to win in 2 hours, 6 minutes and 1 second.
Crippa finished 13 seconds behind in second, while Kamohelo Mofolo of Lesotho placed third, edging out defending champion Benson Kipruto.
The winner’s time was the third fastest in the course’s 50-year history, and the top seven finishers all were among the top 10 all-time times. Almgren became the first marathoner to win his debut in the event since Ethiopia’s Gebre Gebremariam won in 2010.
The New York City Marathon was run through all five boroughs for the 50th time. About 60,000 runners started Sunday, with nearly half of them women, and participants came from more than 140 countries.
Chepkirui of Kenya won the women’s race for the second time, the first being in 2024. She broke away from fellow Kenyan Hellen Obiri in the final 150 metres to finish in 2:24:36.
American Jessica McClain finished second, passing Obiri in the final few strides. McClain was 6 seconds behind Chepkirui, and it was the first time a U.S. woman had finished in the top three since 2018.
Wheelchair racing featured another victory for Marcel Hug, who won the men’s wheelchair race for an eighth time, edging Daniel Romanchuk by just over a second. Catherine Debrunner won the women’s wheelchair race with a time of 1:40:02, the second-fastest in race history.
