The Vancouver Police Department says a 45-year-old woman died after being struck by an SUV while crossing Main Street at National Avenue early Sunday.
The Story
The Vancouver Police Department (VPD) is urging pedestrians and drivers to use extra caution following the death of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle early Sunday.
Police say the 45-year-old woman was hit as she crossed Main Street at National Avenue just after midnight and was crossing at a marked crosswalk.
VPD said it is not yet clear whether she was in the crosswalk with a walk signal at the time of the collision.
An SUV travelling southbound struck the woman, and she was thrown about 30 metres, according to police.
Police, paramedics and fire crews responded to the scene, and the VPD Accident Investigation Unit was also called in.
The woman suffered significant injuries, resuscitation measures were performed, and she was pronounced dead at the scene just before 1:00 a.m. Sunday.
VPD said the driver remained at the scene and is cooperating with police, and that alcohol and substance use are not believed to be factors.
Police said it was dark and raining heavily at the time, and they reiterated a call for caution as visibility becomes more challenging for both pedestrians and drivers this season.
VPD noted that three days earlier, a seven-year-old girl was injured when she was hit by a vehicle at East Pender Street and Victoria Drive and was released from hospital with minor injuries.
Police said charges have not been requested because the investigation into Sunday’s incident is ongoing.
