Man in Motion: The Rick Hansen Story is set to debut at the Vancouver International Film Festival this week, ahead of a Vancouver premiere at the Vancouver Playhouse that Rick Hansen will attend this Saturday.
Writer-director Adrian Buitenhuis said the film follows Hansen’s journey across the world, covering 40,000 kilometres with a small team. Producer Derik Murray added that the movie focuses on a wider effort, describing it as “a ‘team in motion’,” with the people around Hansen emphasized as key to making the journey possible.
Buitenhuis said the film does not only look at the past through Hansen’s perspective, but also shows how it looked and sounded during the trip decades ago. Murray said Hansen provided recorded cassette tapes from the duration of the journey, describing them as “an incredibly important storytelling tool” and noting the tapes feature “his 27-year-old, 28-year-old voice going over it.”
Murray said Canadian celebrity Ryan Reynolds is a producer on the film and that “The decision to bring Ryan Reynolds was automatic,” describing him as “a Vancouver boy” and saying the collaboration was intended to add “additional horsepower” to bringing attention to Hansen in the film.
Buitenhuis said his hope is that viewers will watch the “inspiring mission” and consider “where in their own lives” and communities they can make a change. Murray said Cineplex will bring the film across Canada beginning Nov. 1, with tickets expected to be available on the website Oct. 5.
