Man arrested after Abbotsford fast-food restaurant robbery; charges laid

Abbotsford Police say a suspect arrested after a fast-food restaurant robbery Oct. 15 has been charged with multiple offences.

The Story

Abbotsford Police Department says officers were called to reports of a robbery in progress on Whatcom Road near the Highway 1 exit around 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 15.

Police say a man entered the restaurant, assaulted an employee and fled with money.

AbbyPD said the employee did not suffer any serious injuries and that the suspect was fleeing the scene on a motorcycle.

Officers attempted to stop the man in the Sumas Prairie area, but police say the pursuit was called off due to the suspect’s reckless driving.

Investigators identified the suspect as 35-year-old Walther De Bruin.

Later that evening, with assistance from the Vancouver Police Department, De Bruin was located and arrested in Burnaby.

De Bruin was charged with robbery, disguise with intent, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and flight from police.
