Oilers blank Flames 4-0 to close five-game home stand and snap losing skid

Tristan Jarry made 24 saves as the Edmonton Oilers defeated the Calgary Flames 4-0 on Wednesday to end a two-game losing skid.

The Story

The Edmonton Oilers closed out a five-game home stand with a 4-0 win over the Calgary Flames on Wednesday, snapping a two-game losing skid.

Jarry earned the shutout with 24 saves as Edmonton improved to 9-2-2. Mathieu Joseph, Mattias Ekholm, Kasperi Kapanen and Alex Formenton scored for the Oilers, who also received two assists each from Connor McDavid and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins.

McDavid said the result was a “big win” and highlighted the positives from the homestand as Edmonton tries to “be better day in and day out.”

Calgary entered the game on a recent surge and saw that momentum end. The Flames were also dealing with an injury scare as Cooley was run over in the crease by Oilers forward Colton Dach late in the first and did not return to start the second.

Edmonton opened the scoring 7:46 into the first period when Joseph scored his third of the season after Calgary targeted McDavid’s playmaking. McDavid and Evan Bouchard both recorded assists on the goal.

Ekholm extended the Oilers’ lead at 4:52 of the second period, scoring on a long wrist shot that went through traffic and past Dustin Wolf. The goal was Ekholm’s second of the season and came in his return to the lineup from a concussion.

Kapanen made it 3-0 just 55 seconds into the third period on the power play, finishing after McDavid sent the puck to him for Kapanen’s fourth of the season.

Edmonton added its fourth goal 21 seconds later when Jason Dickinson stole the puck in the Calgary zone and fed it to Formenton, who scored his second of the campaign.

Oilers head coach Mike Babcock said the team effort stood out, noting that Jarry had to make saves in the second period but that the Oilers “looked after him well.”

The win also continued a strong run for McDavid, who extended his points streak to 13 games to reach a league-leading 36 points, adding two assists. Bouchard also extended his streak of recording points in 11 of 13 games this season, leading all Edmonton defencemen with 23 points.

With the Oilers now 7-0-1 when scoring first and 7-0 when leading after 40 minutes, Calgary’s record shifted in the loss: the Flames were 1-6 when allowing the first goal and 0-5 when behind after the second.

Edmonton will play the New York Islanders on Saturday and the New York Rangers on Sunday this weekend.
