St. Louis City SC will attempt to extend an unbeaten run when it meets the Vancouver Whitecaps in a Western Conference match on Wednesday, with both teams separated by one point.
The Story
St. Louis City SC will carry an MLS-record chase into Wednesday’s Western Conference clash with the Vancouver Whitecaps after extending its unbeaten run to 20 matches in all competitions.
The run continued on Sunday when St. Louis defeated the LA Galaxy 6-2, taking its league unbeaten streak to 18 matches. The club’s current total matches the all-time record for an MLS team, previously set by the New York Red Bulls in 2016, while the MLS record for league games without defeat sits at 19, established by FC Dallas in 2004.
Rafael Navarro, who has scored seven goals in six games for St. Louis, said the length of the streak is beyond what he expected. “For me, it's crazy. A 20-game unbeaten streak is just a crazy thought,” Navarro said. “We're fighting for special things here. We're fighting for trophies. So I think you know if we can keep going in this way, I think good things will happen.”
St. Louis coach Yoann Damet pointed to consistency as the reason for the club’s continued momentum. “All the credit goes to the players, showing that level of consistency and the way they've worked, the way they've reflected on each game, and the way they showed up the next one. It's been outstanding,” Damet said.
The Whitecaps arrive with momentum of their own, earning a 1-1 draw at Los Angeles FC on Saturday. Vancouver sits one point clear of St. Louis in the Western Conference.
Vancouver’s season has included only three away losses, with a record of W6 D4 in road matches. Last year, the Whitecaps suffered just four defeats on the road, the only previous season in which they lost fewer than five away games.
St. Louis also holds recent head-to-head form heading into Wednesday after ending a five-match winless run against Vancouver with a 3-1 road win on September 5. Across seven all-time meetings, at least four goals were scored in each of five matches, with one team reaching three or more goals in six of the seven.
Carlo Holse and Brian White were highlighted as key players to watch. Holse scored a hat-trick for St. Louis inside the opening 21 minutes against the Galaxy, while White leads Vancouver’s MLS scoring this season with 17 goals and has scored eight goals in seven career regular-season matches against St. Louis.
Opta win probabilities for Wednesday listed St. Louis City at 47.3%, a draw at 26.2% and Vancouver at 26.5%.
In a separate match prediction based on the same matchup, the forecast picked a St. Louis City win.
