Whitecaps clinch Western Conference No. 1 seed with 2-0 win over Montreal

Cheikh Sabaly and Mihail Gherasimencov scored in the second half as Vancouver beat Montreal 2-0 to secure the Western Conference’s No. 1 seed.

The Story

The Vancouver Whitecaps clinched the Western Conference’s No. 1 seed with a 2-0 victory over the Montreal Impact on Saturday, setting single-season franchise records with 19 wins and 64 points.

Vancouver (19-8-7) reached the top seed ahead of the MLS Cup playoffs, while Montreal (6-20-8) were shut out for the 14th time this season and capped the worst season in club history.

Sabaly opened the scoring in the 50th minute when Ryan Gauld intercepted a pass in the middle of the field and found Sabaly for a right-footed shot that goalkeeper Samsy Keita saved. Sabaly collected the rebound and fired a left-footed shot over Keita for his third goal of the season.

Mihail Gherasimencov made it 2-0 in the 83rd minute, scoring from a difficult angle for his first MLS goal. Yohei Takaoka recorded his 14th clean sheet of the season as Vancouver took control late and held on.
