The Story
Washington Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin has announced that the 2026-27 NHL season will be his final campaign.
The 41-year-old, playing in his 22nd season, has recorded 929 goals, 1,688 points and 1,575 games through the season referenced in the announcement.
If he stays healthy, Ovechkin’s last game against the Vancouver Canucks is scheduled for Dec. 7 at Rogers Arena.
The Capitals and Canucks will also meet earlier in that final season, with a Vancouver visit to Washington set for Dec. 1 at Capital One Arena.
Ovechkin has been a frequent scorer against the Canucks, totalling 16 goals and 28 points in 30 career games.
The release also notes that Ovechkin set an NHL record against Vancouver in 2022, surpassing Wayne Gretzky for the most road goals in league history.
