Federal government pledges $500M for Winnipeg North End wastewater treatment plant upgrade

The federal government says it will provide $500 million to help complete the third phase of Winnipeg’s North End Wastewater Treatment Plant upgrade.

The Story

The federal government says the $500 million funding will go toward the third phase of the North End Wastewater Treatment Plant project, which is designed to remove nutrients such as phosphorus from wastewater.

Officials link high nutrient levels in water flowing from sewage, farming and other sources to harmful algae blooms in Lake Winnipeg, and say the plant upgrade is intended to address that problem.

Winnipeg Mayor Scott Gillingham says the funding will help finish the upgrades that, together, make up the largest infrastructure project in the city’s history. He says the third phase is estimated to cost $1.5 billion, while the entire project is expected to cost more than $3 billion.

The federal government also announced that Manitoba would receive $480 million over 10 years for infrastructure projects related to housing and post-secondary education, along with $218 million over three years for health infrastructure.
