Paul Cotter’s hot start has Vancouver eyeing potential trade value

Vancouver’s Paul Cotter has produced four goals and six points in his first six games, prompting discussion about whether the Canucks could move him at the trade deadline.

The Story

The Vancouver Canucks signed forward Paul Cotter to a one-year contract this summer, and his early-season production has put him in the conversation as a potential trade asset.

Cotter has “exploded out of the gates,” collecting four goals and six points in the first six games of the season for Vancouver. While the team “has quickly come back down to earth,” Cotter’s start has still left many viewing him as a player who could attract interest if he continues to score.

Michael Amato said, “You can’t stop Paul Cotter, you can only hope to contain him,” and added that Cotter’s style—described as high-energy and willing to throw hits—can translate to playoff hockey. Amato also questioned whether the Canucks could realistically target a top return, noting, “It would be a dream scenario for Vancouver, but it feels highly unlikely,” that Cotter would bring a first-round pick.

Amato suggested that players like Cotter are often available around the deadline and that it would be difficult to expect the current level of offence to continue. He pointed to Cotter having only broken 10 goals in a season twice in his career, and noted that Cotter is currently shooting at 57 per cent—adding that such efficiency is expected to drop over time.

For now, Cotter’s focus is on maintaining his role with Vancouver, while the Canucks’ next steps remain tied to how their season develops and what opportunities arise closer to the deadline.
